Hugh Henderson ... served since 1914 'Capt. Hugh Funeral Set' Thomas Hugh Henderson, 80, Jacksonville's first police chief died Saturday in Onslow Memorial Hospital Known to friends as "Capt. Hugh," he joined the police department in 1914, serving as the city's only officer until the force was enlarged in the 1940's. He held the position of assistant chief until his offical retirement about two years ago. Since then, clad in his uniform and wearing sidearms, he spent most nights in the ABC store to prevent possible robberies. Funeral services will be held today at 2 p.m. in Jones Funeral Chapel with Rev. Don Skinner officiating. Burial will be in Jacksonville Cemetery. Six police officers will serve as pallbearers: Chief Clyde R. Cook, Capt. Ralph J. Strother, Lts. Donald Hunnings, Jesse K. McCumbee and Troy Shiver; and Sgt. Richard S. Newton. They will wear dress uniforms and white gloves. Other members of the police department, Sheriff's deputies and ABC officers, along with other area enforcement officers, will be seated in a special section at the church for Honorary Pallbearers. Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Elizabeth (Miss Lizzie) Henderson, Jacksonville: a daughter, Mrs. Raymond Marshall, Jacksonville; one son, Haywood Henderson, Jacksonville; a sister, Mrs. Frank Pierce, New Bern; eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
