The 1910 Census lists her as having been the mother of 17 children, of which seven were alive at the time of the census. The census lists her occupation as doctor/midwife. She had been a slave, owned by Wesley Edward Morton. Zeta Morton Littleton told her daughter, Dorothy, that when Dorothy was 9 months old, "Aunt Mary" had held her and commented that she had held 3 generations of Morton babies. It is said that the family revered her. Additional Comments: When I was growning up, there was an abandoned wooden house with a tin roof which sat in the middle of a tobacco field. It wasn't on our property, which is now where the Swansboro High School & Queens Creek Middle Schools are located, but sat adjacent to it. I was told that this was "Aunt Mary's" place. I am told that in her later life, after the deaths of W.E. & Marinda Morton, she lived in their old home place until her death at which time the property was sold and the house subsequently burned. This house would have been adjacent to the current Swansboro Middle School Annex.
