"Buddy", as he was known, was a Merchant Marine for many years, acting as an "Able Bodied" Seaman aboard various freighters and passenger liners. He travelled extensively in the 1920s and 1930s between New York City and Hamburg, Germany and to South America and California on various steamships. This is a picture of the Franklin K. Lane, a steam tanker. On 9 June, 1942 the ship was torpedoed, by the German U-502 Submarine, about 35 miles northeast of Cape Blanco, Venezuela. The master, chief mate and two crewmen were killed. All others were rescued, and the ship was sunk by an Allied destroyer a short time later to prevent her from being "a hazard to navigation." Additional Comments: Family history says that at least a couple of ships were sunk from under "Buddy". Although he served on this ship, I am not sure if he was aboard this ship the day it was attacked.
