State Archives Written: September 10, 1784 Will of Anderson Gillet Onslow County, NC 1784 In the name of God amen I Anderson Gillet of Onslow County in the State of No. Carolina being very weak and sick in body but of sound & disposing mind, thanks be to God, do make this my last Will & Testament in manner & form following (to wit): First & Chiefly I commend my Soul into the Hands of Almighty God, hoping & trusting for the redemption thereof, through the merits of mediation alone of my blessed Savior Jesus Christ & as for such worldly goods as it hath pleased the Divine Mercy to bestow upon me, I dispose of as follows Item I order my just debts & funeral expenses to be first paid & discharged. Item I lend to my beloved wife Philany for & during her natural life the House and Plantation whereon I at the time dwell with all the land thereto belonging lying on the upper or West side of the Road, & the use of one Negroe Wench called Hagar for the sd term of her natural life–I also lend her during her continuing my widdow all my Household Furniture & all my stock of cattle. Item I will & bequeath to my four sons John, Thomas, Alexander & Seth all my lands to be equally divided between them & their heirs for ever. Item I will & bequeath to my five daughters Elizabeth, Mary, Sarah, Eleanor, & Anna, to each of them a Negroe Child, in case the Negroe wench should have so many; but provided there should not be a sufficient number for each of my sd. Daughters to have one; I then order the deficiency to be made up out of my Estate so that all their portions may be as nearly equal in value as possible— but in case the Negroe wench has more children than one for Each of my aforementioned Daughters, then the surplus to be equally divided between my four Sons as aforementioned.. Item My will & desire is that at my wife’s decease, all my Personal Estate but as aforementioned, shall be equally divided among all my children (viz) John, Thomas, Alexander, Seth, Elizabeth, Mary, Sarah, Eleanor & Anna & their heirs. Item I lend my beloved wife Philany all my Plantation Tools during her Life. Item In order to inable my Executors to pay any just debts I direct that all my Carpenter’s & Joiner’s Tools be sold for twelve months credit & after all my just debts are discharged the residue to be applyed towards schooling my children. Lastly & to conclude I nominate & appoint my Friends John & E. Starkey to be Exec. to this my last Will & Testament revoking all other Wills by me at any time heretofore made & declaring this only to be my last Will & Testament. Additional Comments: Anderson Gillett was the son of John Gillett who came to Eastern NC from the Eastern Shore of Virginia/Maryland. His mother was Elizabeth Patterson Ramsey Gillett, widow of Bernard (Barnett) Ramsey and the daughter of William Patterson of Accomack County, Virginia.
