This Richard was married to his first cousin, Dorothy and she had a brother that married Richard's sister. This helps explain the confusion about brother- in-law/uncle and other relationships. In the Name of God Amen; I Richard Ward of the County of Onslow in the province of North Carolina Gent being in poor State of health and Body, but of a disposeing mind and perfect Memory thanks be given unto God; Calling to mind the Mortality of my Body & knowing that it is Appointed for all Men once to die, do make & ordain this my last Will & Testament, that is to Say principally & first of all I Recommend my Soul into the Hands of God that gave it, & my Body I recommend to the Earth to be Buried in a decent Christian Burial and at the discretion of my Executors hereafter Named_ Trusting in the Merits of my Redeemer JeSus Christ for the Salvation of the one & the Resurrection of the other And as touching my worldly Estate where with it hath pleased God to Bless me with in this Life I give demise & dispose of the same in the following Manner Item I Give and bequeath to my Beloved Daughter Magdalen Jarrot Negros, Jack & Tom, Negro Women Phillis & Sill, also One Hundred Pounds proc'l (? probably means proclamation) Money; together with all the Household Furniture, Cattle & Horses (already given) that they are at this time in Acutal possession of. Negro Child Lucy Arrives to the Age of Six years to her & her heirs & Assigns for Ever- - - - Item I Leave unto my Grand Daughter Elizabeth Foy, One Negro Woman Named Suke & her Child Jude, with her Increase, and Fifty Acres of Land on Town Point, on the Conditions hereafter Express'd -- To Wit, That if my sd Grand Daughter Eliz.
