Contributor's family history note: Within this family Wards married Wards.
This Richard was married to his first cousin, Dorothy and she had a brother
that married Richard's sister. This helps explain the confusion about brother-
in-law/uncle and other relationships. 

In the Name of God Amen; I Richard Ward of the County of Onslow in the
province of North Carolina Gent being in poor State of health and Body, but of
a disposeing mind and perfect Memory thanks be given unto God; Calling to mind
the Mortality of my Body & knowing that it is Appointed for all Men once to
die, do make & ordain this my last Will & Testament, that is to Say
principally & first of all I Recommend my Soul into the Hands of God that gave
it, & my Body I recommend to the Earth to be Buried in a decent Christian
Burial and at the discretion of my Executors hereafter Named_ Trusting in the
Merits of my Redeemer JeSus Christ for the Salvation of the one & the
Resurrection of the other And as touching my worldly Estate where with it hath
pleased God to Bless me with in this Life I give demise & dispose of the same
in the following Manner

Item I Give and bequeath to my Beloved Daughter Magdalen Jarrot Negros, Jack &
Tom, Negro Women Phillis & Sill, also One Hundred Pounds proc'l (? probably
means proclamation) Money; together with all the Household Furniture, Cattle &
Horses (already given) that they are at this time in Acutal possession of. And
after my wife's Death one Negro Man Named George, to her & her heirs & Assigns
for Ever * * * * * * * * * 

Item I Give and bequeath to my Beloved Daughter Ruth Ward Negroes - New River
Jack, James, and a Negro Girl Patience also One Negro Man Called bigg Will -
One cow & Calf, together with all the Household Furniture, & Horses (already
given) (word scratched out) that they are at this time in Actual Possession
of. And after my Wife's Death, One Negro Man called Old Will, to her & heirs
and Assigns for Ever* * * * * * 

Item I Give & bequeath to my Beloved Daughter Dorothy Edwards, One Negro Named
Kitt, one Named Sanders, & a Negroe Girl Named Phebe - One Hundred pounds
prod. Money, one Cow & Calf together with all the Household Furniture & Horses
(already Given) that they are at this time in Actual possession of

Little Will, one Negro Boy called Tombo, and one Negro Girl Called Fann, and a
Negro Man Named Cuff one Feather Bed & Furniture, Six Pewter plates, two
Dishes, and Two Basons, one Desk, three Cows & Calves, One Hundred & Sixty
Acres of Land on Bare Creek, Patented by Christopher Gale, One Horse Rais___

Child Called Lucy to be Valued & then the Money to be equally Divided between
my two Daughters Magdalen Jarrot; & her Sister Huldah Ward (Viz'h) when the
sd. Negro Child Lucy Arrives to the Age of Six years to her & her heirs &
Assigns for Ever- - - - 

Item I Leave unto my Grand Daughter Elizabeth Foy, One Negro Woman Named Suke
& her Child Jude, with her Increase, and Fifty Acres of Land on Town Point, on
the Conditions hereafter Express'd -- To Wit, That if my sd Grand Daughter
Eliz. Foy Should depart this Life before she comes to the Age of Eighteen or
Married, then the sd Negro Woman Suke & her Child Jude & Increase, also the
Fifty Acres of Land on Town Point, to descend to my Son Richard Ward -- but if
She should Survive to the age of Eighteen or Marries before she arrives to
that Age, then the sd Negro Woman Suke and her Child Jude with their Increase
I Give to her & heirs and Assigns for Ever * * * * * * * 

Item I Give And bequeath to my Nephew Richard Thompson (word scratched out)
Fifty Acres of Land Joining upon his Brother James Thompsons Land & Also Joins
upon his Uncle James Thompsons Land across from the River to Mittums Creek
likewise two Cows & a young horse which at this time goes by the Name of his,
to him & his heirs & Assigns for Ever

Item I Lend to John Wiley & to his Wife Susanah a Negro Named Jobe dureing
each of their Natural lives and after both their Deceases to be Equally
Divided amongst the surviving Male Heirs to them their heirs & Assigns for
Ever * * * * * * * *

Item I Give and bequeath unto my Brother in Law Enoch Ward the one half of the
Land whereon my Father liv'd & Dyed in Carteret County; Provided the said
Enoch Ward do give unto my Son Richard Ward within Twelve Months after my
Decease a likely Negro between the Age of Ten & Fourteen Years Old in that
case then I bequeath all my Right to the House and Land in __ [Looks like
"Mat"] Neck to him the sd Enoch Ward his heirs and Assigns for ever * * * * *

Item I Leave to my Beloved Wife Dorothy Ward during her Natural Life and to my
Son Richard Ward the House and (word scratched out) all the Lands where on I
now live, and all my Banks Land lying in Carteret County Core Sound together
with all the Stocks thereon of all kinds; Also my Lands lying on the Rich
Lands of New River in Onslow County, with all my Cattle Hoggs & horses, Also
all my Household Furniture & Plantation tools of all kind thereon, and Negros
Sharper & Wife Rose, and Old Rose, Old Jack, Old Will, Old George, Pompey, &
Old Sharper; Cezar, Joe, Peter, Anthony, Darkhouse & her Child Rachell, Dinah,
Cate, & Tom with all my Money, Book Debts, Notes, & Bonds, with every thing
else that is not herein Mentioned (in this Will) And at my Wifes Decease, Old
Will, Old George, & Old Pompy to go to my Children as is before directed in
this my Will ____ [short line drawn] And then I Give at my Wifes Decease unto
my Son Richard Ward all the Remainder part of the Negro's with every thing
Else that I left to my Wife & my Son Rich'd Ward with all the profits &
Increase ariseing from the said Estate * * * * * * * *

Always reserving out of the same a Comfortable Maintenance for my Son Abner
during his Natural Life to him his Heirs and Assigns forever ___ [short line

then I desire that his Uncle Seth Ward have the Tuition & Care of him & his
Estate

Item My desire is that if my Wife should die before my Daughter Huldah Ward
arrives to the Age of Sixteen Years or Married (at which Time Order for to
have her Negroes) that then she live with her (word "uncle" scratched out)
Brother in Law Edward Ward & that he have the Management of her Estate.

And lastly I do hereby appoint my Loving Wife Dorothy Ward Executrix and my
Friends Seth Ward, Esq'r Mr. Rich'd Jarrott and Mr. Edward Ward to be my
Executors of this my last Will & Testament, and do disannul all & every other
former Will by me at any time before made Ratifying & Confirming this & no
Other to be my last Will & Testament. In Witness whereof I have hereunto sett
my hand & Seal this Thirtieth day of September in the year of our Lord Christs
One Thousand Seven Hundred and Seventy Four * * * * *
