I, Benjamin Berryman, of the County of Onslow and the State of North Carolina, planter, being in bad health, but in perfect and sound mind & memory calling to mind the mortality of body and knowing it is appointed unto all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner & form following, that is to say principally and first of all, I recommend my soul to God who gave it and my body to earth to (be) buried in a decent Christian like burial and to what worldly estate it has pleased God to bestow on me in this life, I give & dispose of the same in the following manner. (Illegible) my will & desire is that all my just debts and funeral expenses be first paid. First, I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Maryann (?) Berryman one negro woman (Beth or Bett ?) and child. Secondly, I give my wife Maryann one (bay horse called Hornet ?) and one cow & calf, one three year old steer, nine head sheep, all the beds and furniture I have in my house, two sows and pigs, one side saddle, one plow and geer, one ox, one (weeding hoe ?), and all my household and kitchen furniture of every description and I further give my wife Maryann forty barrels of good (ground or sound ?) merchantable corn, two thousand pounds of pork, two thousand pounds of fodder, thirty pounds of coffee, sixty pounds of sugar, two barrels of flour, twelve gallons rum, five gallons of molasses, four hundred pounds of seed cotton to her and heirs & assigns forever. I also lend my wife Maryann one negro boy by the name of Bill during her natural life and at her death, it is my desire for the negro boy Bill to be sold and the money to be equally divided between the heirs of Lott (?) Strange and the heirs Polly Simpson to them, their heirs and assigns forever and I lend to my wife Maryann during her natural life one negro man David which is now in the possession of Master (?) Handcock. Then to be sold and the money to be equally divided between the heirs of Lott Strange and the heirs of Polly Simpson to them, their heirs and assigns forever. And I desire all the rest of my negroes not herein named to be sold and the money to be put to the use of my debts and all my stock of cattle not herein given. I desire them to be sold and my mare colt and the balance of my hogs to be sold, the money to go to the use of my debts. And the balance of my (illegible) after taken out what I have given to my wife, to be sold and the money also to go to the use of my debts, all the residue of my property not herein disposed of, I leave it to be sold and the money to be put to the use of my debts and after all my debt is paid, if there is any money left, I give it to my wife Maryann and two sides of (illegible) and one large side of (illegible) and I do hereby appoint Jonas Johnston and my wife Maryann Berryman my whole and sole executors of this my last will and testament, denying all others and (illegible) this and no other to be my last will and testament.
