This file was contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives by: Beverly Cole ==================================================================== CHRISTOPHER DUDLEY WILL State of North Carolina County of Onslow Will Book 1 I, Christopher Dudley of Onslow County, State of North Carolina, have made, ordained & published & do hereby make, ordain & publish this instrument of writing my last will & testament revoking all others. First, some time in the year of 1827, I gave to my son Edward (B. or R.) Dudley the plantation on which I reside & other lands, one hundred of my negroes to be selected by family, one half of my stock & other property as will more fully appear by reference by deeds of gift made at this time which gifts I do hereby renew & confirm agreeable to the true intent of meaning. Second, I give & bequeath to my grand children & to their heirs forever the residue of my Estate except as hereinafter otherwise disposed of, consisting of land, negroes, stock, chattels & effects of every kind, share & share alike the lands & some of the (illegible) disposed negroes, stock, chattels & other effects. I leave discretionary with my Executor to sell or divide in part or whole the proceeds of any sale to be invested in stock of the United States or State Bank & some other valuable & productive funds for the use & benefit of my grand children aforesaid & for which purpose I do hereby authorize & empower my Executor to sell & dispose of in part or the whole of the lands, (illegible) disposed negroes, stocks, chattels, & other effects at public or private sale at such time & on such terms he may think most beneficial for said legatees. I desire my negroes may be divided & distributed in families as far as practical. The (illegible) of the negroes & dividend of stock if necessary may be appropriated to the maintenance & schooling of my grand children aforesaid otherwise invested yearly in stock or funds aforesaid for their benefit. Third, I give & bequeath to my Executor for purposes hereafter named, my negro man Cesar & Rachael his wife, negro woman Beck (?) & her two children Elijah & John, the plantation & mill purchased of William Cox & stock of all kinds or seed (?) plantation & five thousand dollars in cash to be made out of my Estate. The negroes above mentioned I request & enjoin on my Executor to hold free from servitude of all persons whatsoever, settle them on the plantation and bestow on them for their support & maintenance, the income of said plantation & mills. Negro Tony & his wife now on said plantation, I desire may there remain, support themselves & contribute to the support of the above named negroes. And for that purpose, I give said Tony & his wife to my Executor. I further request & enjoin on my Executor to provide for the education of the boys, Elijah & John, Beck's children, bind them to some good tradesman, protect & befriend them in their rearing & when of age to procure if possible their emancipation in volume & legal form. The intent of the five thousand dollars I desire & expect will be appropriated to the education of said boys, Elijah & John, during their bondage (?) & on coming of age, the said sum of five thousand together with the plantation & mills aforesaid or the proceeds of sale thereof. I desire my Executor will keep & pay over to said boys, Elijah & John or either of them in whole or part & at such time as to enable them to commence business & live in comfortable & respectable wok as he may deem discreet & proper. Fourth, I give & bequeath to my grandchildren Edward D & Christopher Hill one negro boy each in place of those given them that they had the misfortune to loose. I have appointed & constituted & do hereby appoint & constitute my son Edward B. Dudley, the executor of this my last will & testament. Then was the Execution of the foregoing will of Christopher Dudley duly proved in open court by the oath of James Thompson Senr., one of the subscribing witnesses thereto & Edward (B. or R.)
