I, Solomon Melvin of the County of Onslow and State of North Carolina, being ill in health, but of sound mind and memory but calling to mind the certainty of death, do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following (viz.) that my body be buried in a decent and christian manner and that my soul to God who gave it to be raised in resurrection to life by Christ (illegible) Lord. 2nd the worldly goods which it hath pleased Almighty God to bless me with, my will & desire is to dispose of them as follows. After my funeral expenses and just debts are paid, I will and bequeath to my beloved wife, Elisabeth Melvin (viz.) I lend her my said wife Elisabeth Melvin all my total both real, personal and perishable of every description during her natural life or widowhood. If my said wife Elisabeth Melvin should marry, my will and desire is that in that case that she hold and possess during her life, my Queens Creek lands containing one hundred and twenty seven acres, more or less, also one bed and furniture, one cow and calf, one sow and pigs & no more for the term of her life. 3rd I will and devise in case one or more of my children should marry during my said wife Elisabeth's widowhood, that she (illegible) them with what perishable property she can conveniently share them, at the same time calling upon two freeholders to value the same, the she should distribute to them and for said freeholders to enter the Valuation in writing from under their hands, and said writings to be kept filed among my papers by my said wife Elisabeth. And that the said amount be deducted from their distribution share, hereafter to be given. 4th I give to my son Ivy Melvin all that tract of land I possess on both side of Mulberry Swamp and one half of the price or tract of land purchased of Wm. Taylor, to him, his heirs & assigns forever. 5th I give to my son William Melvin all that tract of land I now live on lying in the North West prong of Grants Creek and one half of the piece purchased of Wm. Taylor, to him & his heirs and assigns. 6th I give my negro girl Hannah to my daughter Sarah Melvin and to the lawful heirs of her body. 7th I give to my daughter Elizabeth Melvin my negro boy Alfred to her and the lawful heirs of her body. 8th I give my negro man Ben and my Queens Creek lands to be equally divided between my two daughters, Sarah and Elizabeth, to them & their heirs. 9th I wish that fifty acres of my land lying on Hill Branch be sold and the proceeds to go toward the schooling of my two daughters Sarah & Elizabeth Melvin. 10th My will is after my wife Elisabeth's death or marriage, that all my perishable property before (?) lent her be equally divided among my four children, Ivy Melvin, William Melvin, Sarah Melvin and Elizabeth Melvin. Lastly, I appoint my son Ivy Melvin Executor of this my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the 12th day of September in the year of our Lord 1828.
