I, John Matticks, being in a low state of health but of sound & perfict memory blessed by god for it do this day make & publish this my last will & testament in manner following to wit. 1st I give & bequeath to my son Micajah F. (?) Matticks all that piece of land lying on the miry branch bought of Ivy Watson together with four negroes to wit - Esther, Enoch, Mariah & Lucy with one bed, bed stead & furniture. 2nd I give unto my son Francis Matticks all the land bought of Selby H. Wise (?) & that bought of Ivy Watson adjoining it together with five negroes to wit - Elias, Tony, Milly, Edney, & Harriet with one bed, bedstead & furniture & my new canoe I leave equally betwixt Francis Matticks & Allen Matticks. 3rd I give unto my son William B. Matticks all that land lying in Carteret County bought of Benjamin Cowel & wife Together with all the land bought of William Jones & wife in the county of Onslow together with five negroes to wit - Balaam, Lewis, Pat & her child Hester & Edmund with one bed, bedstead & furniture the choicest also my flat (?) & fifteen dollars extra of the present years crop which I wish to be divided between William, John & Allen Matticks. 4th I give unto my son John Matticks all the land bought of Kilby Jones & Edward Starkey together with five negroes to wit - Isaac, Luke, Nan, Soock & Reuben together with one bed, bedstead & furniture also my large canoe. 5th I give unto my son Allen Matticks all the land bought of Israel Gray & John Starkey on which I now live together with five negroes to wit - Haladay, Moan, Elsy, Sofia & Anthony also one bed, bedstead & furniture. 6th I leave to my niece Sally H. Stephenson one bed, bedstead & furniture. 7th My will & desire is that all the rest of my property not mentioned in the will should be equally divided among my five children except two cows & calves which I wish my son William to have also excepted & not to be divided all of the household & kitchen furniture not mentioned in the will. 8th I constitute & appoint my son Francis Matticks & William B. Matticks, Executors to this my last will & testament. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal March 7, 1828. (signed) John Matticks Test: Thos. Then was the foregoing will of John Matticks duly proved in open court by the oath of Brice Burnap one of the subscribing witnesses & the codicil proved by Eben Burnap subscribing witness & Francis Matticks & William B.
