I, Jesse Sandlin, Sen., of Onslow County, being in a low state of bodily health but of sound mind and memory, thanks be to God for his mercy & knowing it is appointed for all men once to die, do make this my last will and testament, in the following manner. First, I recommend my soul to the hand of my redeemer and by body to its parent earth to be buried in a decent Christian like manner at the discretion of my Executors hereafter named and as to my worldly estate that it has pleased God to bless me with, I dispose of in the following manner, that is to say. First, I desire that all my just debts 7 funeral charges be paid and satisfied and for the purposes of paying my said debts, I leave the land and plantation once the property of John Thompson now belonging to me to be sold by my executors at six months credit for the purpose of paying my debts aforesaid and I also leave for the purpose of paying said debts, should it be required, I leave all my horses, cattle, oxen & ox cart, hogs & sheep, my household and kitchen furniture, my feather beds, bed steds and furniture, my plantation tools of every description to be sold by my executors in like manner and length of credit with the John Thompson land. I also give and bequeath to my nephews, Robert Sandlin & Henry Sandlin (under the conditions hereafter particularly and distinctly expressed) the land and improvements of every description thereon & thereto belonging on which I now live that I bought of James Glenn, to be equally divided between them, their heirs and assigns forever. And I lend my negro woman named Chancy, which I bought from the estate of Lott Strange (from John A. Averitt who was authorised by Onslow County court to sell said Strange's slaves for division) to Robert Sandlin. Sandlin, during his natural life and at his death, should she the said Chancy survive him the said Robert, I then hereby declare the said Chancy (formerly a slave) to be liberated and set free and I do hereby emancipate, liberate and set free her the said Chancy to be thence forward treated as a free person of colour (NOTE: these words were lined through "and to enjoy as to her own personal liberty") as such the liberty of such as to her own personal liberty according to the existing laws of North Carolina in such cases made and provided which said slave Chancy I have thought to liberate and have hereby liberated as aforesaid for and in consideration of her honesty and strict attention to her various duties as a slave, particularly her attention to my family in sickness & in a variety of other duties which as a slave she has been remarkable exemplary in her performance and further it is my will that if Chancy should during her servitude with Robert Sandlin have any children, children I give such child or children to Robert Sandlin, his heirs or assigns forever. I also give to Wm. Thompson that I have raised, one feather bed, bed steds and furniture now in his possession and the amount of twenty five dollars in a note or notes to him, his heirs and assigns forever and after the payment of my just debts by my Executors from the sale of the property set apart for that purpose should it be sufficient and a surplus and all such other property as is not already mentioned or given away to my three nephews, Lewis Sandlin Snr., Daniel Sandlin and Nichodemus Sandlin to be equally divided between them, their heirs and assigns forever, and if the property hereby set apart for the payment of my debts should not be sufficient to discharge them the balance of said debts so remaining due and unpaid must be paid and satisfied by my nephews Robert Sandlin & Henry Sandlin (which is the conditions aluded to in the gift of the land made to them of the land whereon I now live). And lastly, I nominate and appoint my friend, Wm. Humphrey Esqr. of Onslow County & my nephew Henry Sandlin of Duplin County, Executors of this my last will and testament, it being read by me and approved denying all others. In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal this 1st of Sept. 1835. (signed) Jesse Sandlin Signed & acknowledged before me James Glenn F. (L. or T.)
