I, Elijah Simmons, of the county of Onslow & State of North Carolina, Planter, being in a reasonable state of health & of perfect mind & memory blessed by god for the same, & calling unto mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is once appointed for all men to die, do make & ordain this my last will and testament that is to say principally and first of all, I give & recommend my soul unto the hands of Almighty God that gave it & my body to the earth to be buried in a decent, Christian manner at the discretion of my Executors & Executrix, nothing doubting but at the general resurrection, I shall receive the same by the mighty hand of God & as to making (?) such worldly estate as it hath pleased God to bless me with in this life, I give, devise & dispose of the same in the following manner & form. ITEM 1st I give & bequeath unto my beloved wife Adahann Simmons two negro girls Hannah & Fanny, two feather bed, steads and furniture, half dozen stool chairs, four slag (?) chairs & all my crockery ware, one mahogany table also choice of y horses, one yoke of oxen, one hand mill, one grind stone, one chair & harness choice of carts, three cows & calves, eight head of sheep, all my kitchen furniture, one large trunk & two small ones. I lend unto my beloved wife Adahann Simmons, my house & plantation, all my woodland, bank land, one cotton machine, one still, one negro man called Onslow during her natural life or widowhood. ITEM 2nd I give unto my son Henry Simmons one negro girl named & called Tiner. ITEM 3rd I give unto my son Avirett Simmons one negro man named & called Prince. ITEM 4th I give unto Haskel Simmons, son of Brice Simmons, one negro girl called Diner. ITEM 5th I give unto my son Elijah Simmons two negroes Jude & Silas. ITEM 6th I give unto my son David Simmons two negroes Tony & Leah, one feather bed. ITEM 7th I give unto my daughter Scena Smith youngest son one negro named & called Ginna. ITEM 8th I give unto my daughter A--- (illegible) Tilmon one negro called Selah. ITEM 9th I give unto Elizabeth Rhodes or have given two negroes girls, Pleasant & Amy also two cows. ITEM 10th I give unto my son Ivy Simmons two negroes Anthony & Lena also one feather bed & furniture. ITEM 11th I give unto my son in law William B. Jones one negro girl called Juda (?) to him & his heirs forever also all my land lying on the north side of Wolf Swamp. ITEM 12th I give unto my wife Adahann Simmons one loom and my sloup (?) & harness also all my wheels & carts also one years provision out of my Estate. ITEM 13th I give unto my son Elijah Simmons to him & his heirs (?) I nominate & appoint my son Elijah Simmons & my wife Adahann Simmons my sole Executors, this my last will & testament hereby making and disannulling all other wills by me heretofore made declaring this to be my last will & testament in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal this 10th day December 1827.
