This 20th of October 1825 (or 1823) I, Joel Wilder of Onslow County a farmer by occupation being in a low state of bodily health but of my usual understanding & knowing it is appointed for all men once to die do make this my last will & testament in the following words. First, I recommend my soul to the care of my redeemer & my body to its parent earth & concerning my worldly estate I dispose of it in the following manner that is to say… I lend to my beloved wife Hester during her natural life my negro woman slave Tilda & her eldest son Shad, her next eldest son Julius & her daughter Selah together with their increase & also my stock of cattle, my hogs and horse during her natural life & at my wife's death such part of my cattle, hogs & my horse if then alive together with negro woman Tilda, boy Shad & Julius & girl Selah & all their increase be equally divided between my following children…that is to say my son Jesse & my daughters Lavina, Fanny, Betsey, Sena & (?)itta to them their heirs & assigns forever. I also lend my beloved wife Hesther all my beds, bed steads & furniture, my household & kitchen furniture & my plantation tools of every description during the term of her natural life & at her death the last of (illegible) property to be equally divided between my grand daughter Anna Wilder, my Grandson Joel Wilder, & the heirs, male & female of my daughter Selah (illegible) to them & their heirs & assigns forever. I give & bequeath to my son Malachi Wilder the sum of ten dollars to him, his heirs & assigns forever which gift of ten dollars to Malachi is not intended to hinder his accounting with my Executors hereafter named for same amount due me in a judgment I now hold against him which judgment deduct to balance against a note sd Malachi holds against (?? me and has held against ??). I also appoint John A. Avirett of Onslow County & John Kennedy of Duplin County Executors to this my last will & testament all other wills & acknowledge this to be my will in testimony where of I have sit my hand & seal & in presence of James Glenn, James Strange. Then was the foregoing will of Joel Wilder duly proved in open court by the oath of James Glenn, one of the subscribing witnesses & John Kennedy one of the Executors therein named qualified thereto agreeably to law.
