I use "House" in the title only because that is the spelling used as the testator's "signature". In the name of God, Amen, I, Buckner Howse, of the County of Onslow & State of North Carolina, being sick but of sound disposing mind and memory, hereby declare this my last will and testament as follows. I recommend my sole to God who gave it and my body to its mother dust, to be decently buried by my executors whom I shall hereafter appoint. 1st It is my will and desire that all my just debts and funeral expences be paid as I shall hereafter direct. 2nd It is my will and desire that my two old servants Phillis and Sarah be supported by my two sons Hill W. Howse and Samuel O. Howse, out of the legacies I design hereafter to give them. 3rd As soon as my Executors deem it expedient that reasonable notice may have bin given after my death, I desire them to sell on a credit of six months my tract of land called the Cowhorn tract, upon which John Padrick is now living; also my house and lot in Jacksonville and the following negrow slaves, viz., man Jo. and woman Eady and all of her children & negro woman Caty & negro man Sam. 4th It is my will and desire that my Executors cause my crop of every kind to be cultivated, maid and housed and when housed, to sell the same together with all of my parishable property of every kind; my household & kitchen furniture & all my plantation of turpentine tools on a credit of six months. 5th I give and bequeath to the surviving heirs of my eldest son James H. House, the following negrows, namely Pollace, Anthony, Venus, Wright and Tuck, being the slaves that I put in the possession of my son James. H. Howse previous to his having left North Carolina. I also give to each of said son's surviving children five dollars to be paid them by my executors out of my estate. 6th I give and bequeath to son Edmund D. House a negrow boy Cupit, which I placed in his possession before he left North Carolina. I also lend to my said son Edmund D. House during his life, negrow woman Carry & children Leah, Lewis, Cherry & Mariah and all of her increase and then to be equally divided between his lawful heirs. 7th I give and bequeath to my son in law Lewis Dishongh five dollars to be paid him by my executors out of my estate. 8th I give and bequeath to my son Hill W. House the following negrow slaves: negrow woman Phillis and her children Lizzy, George & Virgil, and all of her increase; girl Marinda, boy Warrin & Frank. Also I give to my son H. W. House my plantation called the River plantation near Jacksonville. 9th I give and bequeath to my son Samuel O. House the following slaves: negrow woman Conny and her children Nelly, Bob, Alfred and all of her increase; Easter and man Ben & Briant. I also give to my said son Samuel O. Howse, my plantation I now live on. 10th I lend to my two grand daughters Ann E. Dishongh & Mary E. Dishongh, during their lifetime, the following slaves: Silvy and her children Margaret, Eliza & also of her increase & boy Balam and for my two sons Hill W. House and Samuel O. House to pay over to my two grand daughters Ann E. Dishongh & Mary E. Dishongh the sum of one thousand dollars, one half of the amount to be paid by Hill W. House and the other half of the said amount to be paid by Samuel O. House. In case that either of my grand daughters should die without any lawful issue, for the said property to return to my two sons H. W. House and S. O. House & be equally divided between them. 11th I give and bequeath to Miss Mary Williams fifty dollars to be paid her by my executors out of my estate for her kind attention to me at all times, particular since I have been sick. 12th I give and bequeath to Miss Sarah Jane Ward a good bead and bead stead furniture for the bead and also one hundred dollars to be paid her by my executors out of my estate. 13th It is my will and desire that after the payment of my just debts and funeral expences and all the legacies herein bequeathed, that all the remainder of my estate arising from property herein directed to be sold and all notes and accounts due me at my death be equally divided between my two sons H. W. House & S. O. House and my two grand daughters Ann E. Dishongh and Mary E. Dishongh. 14th It is my will and desire that, that portion of my estate herein given to my said two grand daughters remain in the possession of my son Hill W. House, the servants to be hired out, the other portion of their legacy to be put to the use of buying negrow boys and for the negrows to be kept hired out for the benefit of my two grand daughters untill Ann E. Dishongh or Mary E. Dishongh marries or arrive to the age of twenty one years & then be equally divided between them. 15th I hereby nominate and constitute and appoint my two sons Hill W. House and Samuel O. House executors to this my last will and testament in testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand & fixed my seal, the 20 day of August 1851. (signed) B.
