I, John Matticks, of the County of Onslow and State of North Carolina, considering the uncertainty of human life do therefore while in a firm state of mind and sound recollection, make and ordain this instrument to be my last will and testament. Imprimise, it is my wish and desire that my just debts be paid and satisfied by my Executors. ITEM I give and bequeath to my loving wife Eliza Matticks, Negroes Robert and wife, Charny and Citty, Richard and Nan, and their increase for ever and one horse, Rattler and Bruce and her choice of our bed and furniture. ITEM I divide all of my property both real and personal estate to be equeally divided amongst my four children as they come of age, that is to say Edward W. Matticks & Joseph T. Matticks, John F. Matticks & Christopher J. Matticks. Finally, I constitute my friends Francis Matticks and William P. Ferrand my executors to this will, renouncing all others. In testimony I the said John Matticks have to this instrument set my hand and affixed thereto my seal the twenty six day of Feby eighteen hundred & forty one, done executed and performed by the Testator as his deliberate act day and date above written. Then was the will of John Matticks decd., offered for probate and admitted on the oaths of Hardy Pitts and George W. Biddle, the subscribing witnesses thereto and William P. Ferrand, one of the Executors there named appeared in open court and was duly qualified as Executor thereto and Francis Matticks, the other Executor mentioned in said will also appeared and refused to qualify when the widow of said deced. Appeared in court and filed her dissent to said will which was accepted by said court and it was also ordered that letters testamentary be granted to William P. Ferrand, Executor to said will.
