Matticks, of Onslow County, being of sound mind and perfect memory, do make and publish this my last will & testament in form and manner as follows, that is to say ITEM first, I loan to my beloved wife the following property during the term of her natural life or widowhood, one piece or parcel of land bounded as follows: beginning at an ash tree on the west side of the run of Webb's alias Ashes Creek, thence running north fourteen poles to the end of a division fence then running along the fence north eighty seven poles, a cherry tree in the crook of the fence, then No. 6 deg Wt. Thirty three poles to the middle of the road leading from the place where I now live to my river place, then along the road So. 83 deg Wt, fourteen poles So. 75 deg wt, fourteen poles to the main west ditch bridge, then down said main west ditch N. 10 deg wt, sixteen poles N. 6 ½ wt, forty poles N. 45 deg wt, two poles N. 8 deg wt, fourteen poles to a black gum in the head of Bigg branch, then down the various courses of the same N. 45 deg wt, to where the Hardy Pitts patent line crosses the said branch, then along the patent line S. 31 deg et, twenty six poles due south twenty four poles to a pine, my corner then S. 45 deg wt to the fork of the road formerly known as the old Ferry road, then down the main public road to said Webb's alias Ashes creek, then down the meanders of the creek to the beginning. ITEM second, I loan to my wife as aforesaid my entire house hold and kitchen furniture for the term of her natural life or widowhood, also one horse named Charles and the new buggy & gear, one yoke of oxen & cart her choice, two ploughs and gear, one No. 10, one No. 14", three cows and calves her choice, also what sheep I now have, two sows & pigs (liguire or liguise?) all the gold & silver coin & one hundred dollars also. ITEM the third, I give and bequeath to my wife as aforesaid the follow Negroes, Alfred, Dorcas, Holliday & Hagar, her heirs and assigns forever, also such plantation tools as my be on hand at my death. ITEM I give and bequeath to my son William Nash Matticks the following lands beginning at the mouth of a new cut ditch when it empties into the main west ditch then running along said new cut ditch No. 84 deg et sixty six poles to a maple, then No. 45 deg et, fifty four poles to a small black gum in the head of a branch, then up said branch S. 12 deg wt thirty four poles to the lower end of the main east ditch, then up the same S. 18 deg wt, 10 poles S. 48 deg wt, six poles S. 27 deg wt, thirty poles to the main east ditch bridge S. 45 deg, one pole due south along another ditch twenty two poles, the fork of a small ditch, then down the main ditch S. 35 deg Wt, fourteen poles S. 11 wt, twelve poles to the head of Poplar Branch to a maple, then down the meanders of said branch to Webb's alias Ashes Creek, then up the various courses of the creek to a small ash tree, the beginning corner of the land loaned to my wife, then running up said line North fourteen poles to the lower end of the aforementioned dividing fence, then with the fence due North eighty seven poles to a cherry tree in the crook of the fence, then N.1 deg wt, thirty three poles to the middle of a road that leads to my river place, then So 83 deg wt, fourteen poles So. 75 deg wt, fourteen poles to the aforesaid main west ditch bridge then with the main ditch to the beginning, his heirs & assigns forever. ITEM I give and bequeath to my son George Dennis Matticks, one piece or parcel of land bounded as follows, beginning at the main east ditch bridge, in the middle of the road leading from where I now live to my river place, then running down the main east ditch as aforesaid N. 27 deg et, five poles to a stake nigh a young white oak tree, then So. 89 deg wt, one hundred & seventy five poles to a forked black gum in a branch, then running along the edge of the river swamp north to white oak river, then down the various courses of the river to the mouth of Webb's alias Ashes Creek, then up the courses of said creek to the mouth of Poplar branch, then up the meanders of said branch to a maple, the corner of the tract devised to my son W. N. Matticks, then up a ditch N. 11 deg et, twelve poles to the fork of the ditch N. 35 deg et, fourteen poles No. 7 deg wt, forty poles due North twenty two poles N. 45 deg et, one pole to the beginning, his heirs & assigns forever. ITEM I give and bequeath to my son Benjamin Matticks one other piece or parcel of land bounded as follows, beginning at a stake nigh a young white oake the corner of the tract divised to my son George D. Matticks thence running along the line of said tract reverse So. 89 deg et, one hundred & seventy five poles to a forked black gum in a branch, then along the edge of the river swamp North to White Oak river then up the various courses of the river to the mouth of Freeman's creek then up the courses of said creek to a maple at the mouth of Bigg branch, then up the said branch south twenty eight poles So. 20 deg wt, forty poles then So. 45 deg. Et, up said Bigg branch to the lower and of the main west ditch, then up said ditch to the mouth of a new cut ditch, then running with said ditch N. 84 deg et, sixty six poles to a maple, then N. 45 deg et, fifty four poles to a small black gum in the head of a small branch, then N. 87 deg et, forty poles to centre of two sweet bums, ash & water oake, then up a branch So. 12deg wt, thirty four poles to the lower and of the main east ditch, then up the ditch to the first station, his heirs & assigns forever. ITEM to my son James A. Matticks, I give and bequeath all my land known as the Micajah F. Burnap land, lying on the west side of the main road & on the north side of Webb's alias Ashes Creek. My will & request is that my small library be left with & for the use of my family. ITEM I give and bequeath to my daughter Kitura Caroline Matticks one Negro woman named Tamar. ITEM the land heretofore loaned to my wife during her natural life or widowhood, my will & desire is that at her death or marriage, said lands to descend to my son Edgar J. Matticks (now and infant) his heirs and assigns forever. ITEM my double barrel shot gun I give to my son James A. Matticks. ITEM I also give to my son George D. Matticks one single barrel shot gun ITEM The amount of notes & money now in hands after settling with James A. & Geo D. Matticks where I am there guardian, the balance to be equally & divided between my four younger children, viz., William N. Matticks, Kitura Caroline Matticks, Benjamin Matticks & Edgar J. Matticks and if either of them should die without a lawful heir, then the portion of the one so dying without lawful heirs as aforesaid shall descend to the surviving. ITEM the proceeds of my personal estate after my death & payment of my just debts, my will is that it be by my executor hereafter named equally divided between all my children, share & share alike. ITEM my will & desire is that if I should die before the expiration of the present year, that my executor hire after named keep the hands & teams & stock of provision now on hand & carry on the crop untill it is completed and housed. ITEM the provision now on hand not wanted for this years consumption, my will & desire is that is be sold by my executor as he may think best. ITEM the real & personal estate that I have heretofore divised & bequeathed to my several children, my will and desire is that if either of them should die without lawful issue, then the share of the one so dying to desend to the others surviving. ITEM I nominate and appoint my friend Erasmus H. Coston my sole executor to this my last will and testament to manage the business untill my son James A. Matticks arives to the full age of one & twenty years. My will & desire is that either my wife Kitura or son James A. Matticks take the guardianship of my youngest children. ITEM the residue of my Negroes not heretofore disposed of I leave to my six children to be hired out by my representative untill each child arives at age of twenty one years and as each come of age, take his portion of said Negroes. Taylor State of North Carolina} Onslow County} Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions June Term 1857 Then was the due execution of the within last will and testament of Allen B. Matticks, decd., duly proved in open court by the oath of Isaac T. Barber and Allen G. Taylor, the subscribing witnesses and ordered to be recorded and filed and Erasmus H.
