I, Meriam Newbold, of the County of Onslow & State of North Carolina, being of sound mind & perfect memory, blessed be God, do this the 15th day of March & in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred & forty nine, make & publish this, my last will & testament, in manner following, that is to say, First, I give and bequeath to my daughter (Derise?) my two Negroes Clinton & Hagar to her & to her heirs & assigns forever. Second, I also give & bequeath to my said daughter Derise two cows & calves, her choice, her heirs & assigns. Thirdly, I also give & bequeath to my said daughter Derise one beaufat (buffet?) together with every article of crockery ware that she may choose therein. Fourthly, I also give to my daughter Derise one block, three flagg bottomed chairs, one wooling wheel & cards & linen wheel, her heirs & assigns forever. Fifthly, the provision now on hand, that is to say, corn, bacon & fat, I give unto my daughter Derise, heirs & assigns. Sixthly, I give unto my son in law Robert Carney two sows & pigs or shoats (as the case may be), his choice. Seventh, I give & bequeath to my daughter Derise one feather bed & furniture, she to make choice of such furniture as she may take, also four head of sheep & six head of geese. Eighth, I give and bequeath to my grand daughter Patsey Ann Scott, one bead, beadstead & furniture. Ninth, I give unto my grand daughter Mariah Gause Barber, one feather bed, bedstead & furniture (striped tick), her heirs & assigns. My will is that said bed should be well taken care of by my son in law Robert Carney & wife Derise & delivered up to her on her arriving at the age of fifteen years. I also give to my said grand daughter Mariah Dause Barbour one drawn table, one blew chest, one pares and irons, one large pot & pot trammel, one young heifer. The articles last mentioned to be taken care of by my son in law Robert Carney & his wife Derise & to be delivered up by them to her, the said Mariah Dause Barbour, on her arriving at the age of fifteen years. Tenthly, The residue of my personal estate not all ready disposed of, my will is that my executor hereinafter named, should as soon as practicable after my demise, expose to public sale & after paying all my just debts, shall divide the proceeds of sale of my said personal estate between my three grand daughters, viz. Mary Jane Barbour, Catharine Caroline Barbour and Julia Ann Barbour, share & share alike. Eleventh, and I hereby make & ordain my worthy friend & son in law, Robert Carney, my executor of this my last will & testament. In witness whereof, I the said Merriam Newbold, have to this my last will & testament set my hand & affixed my seal the day & year above written.
