This file was contributed for use in the North Carolina USGenWeb Archives by: Beverly Cole ============================================================================ Record of Wills, Book A 1800-1825 Onslow County, North Carolina In the name of God, Amen: I, John Barber, desnt of Onslow County and State of North Carolina, seriously considering the uncertainty of human life, at best do make this my last will & testament, intending hereby to dispose of all my worldly affairs as justice & equity shall seem to direct. First of all, I most humbly command my soul to the extensive mercy of that all wise supreme intelligent being who gave it unto me, most earnestly at the same time deprecating his Justice. Item: I lend unto my wife, Mary Barber, during the term of her natural life and no longer, the plantation whereon I now live which I purchased of Abram Gibson and upon the same term of and in the same restrictions the following Negroes, to wit: Jacob, Jake, Luke and Sol and as much of my household and kitchen furniture and stocks of any kind such as horses, cattle, hoggs and farming utensils as she require or need - also one years provisions, corn, pork & poultry and at her desire to be disposed of as shall be specified hereafter. Item: At the desire of my wife aforesaid, I give unto my son John Barber of Wilson County & State of Tennessee the same plantation which I lent her containing about 400 acres more or less to him, his heirs and assigns forever. I also give my said son the following Negro slaves (to wit; Kingo, Nell and some of her children - Chan, Hal, Crisslia, Sal, Jemima & Bet) to him, to his heirs and assigns forever. Item: I settle the following negros upon my friends & their session as Trustees of my daughter Mary Fields (John Barber my son and Hinton Barber giving unto them full power and at all times to prevent any waste or damage Negroes named Jake, after the decease of my wife, Irma Rachel, Kate, Sal and their increase. Reserving to my said daughter the full enjoyment & use thereof during the term of her life and after her decease the same & increase to be equally and fairly divided among her children to share and share alike, them and their assigns forever. Item: I give and bequeath unto my grandson Thomas Barber and John Barber, children of my oldest son the late Joseph Barber, the plantation I purchased of the heirs of the late Thomas Gibson, whereas their father died containing 600 acres more or less, to share and share alike them their heirs and assigns forever. Item: I give and bequeath unto my grandchildren, heirs of said Joseph, the following Negro slaves (to wit: Murbe, Lish, Anaka, Sarah the younger, Sylvia, Harret, Cesar, Phyllis, Fan, Dick; the children of Lish, Hannah & Winny) by this with all their increase to be equally and fairly divided among my said grandchildren, Thomas Barber, John Barber, & Helen Barber, to share and share alike, them, their heirs and assigns forever. Item: The residue of my estate real and personal not already divided, especially that part thereof lent my wife after decease, I direct my executors and fully authorize them to sale on a credit suitable to themselves & the proceeds thereof, after deducting necessary charges, to be equally and fairly divided among John Barber my son, Mary Fields and the children of my late grandchildren to share & share alike them their heirs & assigns forever. Last of all, I nominate constitute & appoint my children John Barber & Mary Fields executors of this my last will, acknowledging this only and revoking any others by me made. In testimony whereof I have this day set my hand and affixed my seal, the 17th day of May 1811.
