This file was contributed for use in the North Carolina USGenWeb Archives by: Beverly Cole ============================================================================ Record of Wills, Book A 1800-1825 Onslow County, North Carolina In the name of God, Amen: I, Reuben Grant of Onslow, being sick and weak of body but of sound mind and memory, calling to mind the mortality of my body, I do make & ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following: First, my body to the earth & my soul to the mercy of my blessed Redeemer & as to my worldly goods, I will in manner and form following, first my debts and necessary charges be paid & satisfied. ITEM: I give unto my beloved wife Elizabeth Grant my horse Smoker & chair and harness, mair dove, six cows & calves, two yoak of oxen, ten ewes, twenty head hogs, three beds & furniture, two plows, two axes, two hoes, all my puter & earthen ware & pots. ITEM: I lend unto my beloved wife during her natural life, Negro Jude & Garl Chain; fellows Shade, Big Balam, Ira, Will, Suton, Virgin (ia?), Simbuck Carl, and after her death, the said Negroes and increase to return to my son Solomon Grant, to him and his heirs and assigns. I lend my wife the plantation whereon I live during her life, then to my son Solomon E. Grant, to him, his heirs and assigns forever. ITEM: I give unto Reuben Stephen Grant, at the time her arrives to the age of eighteen, two Negroes; boy Imboon & Garl Col, but should he not arrive to that age, the Negroes I give to my son Solomon E. Grant, to him, his heirs and assigns forever. ITEM: My will is that my executors sell two Negroes, Jim and Rachel, in order to discharge a judgment against me. ITEM: I give unto my son Solomon E. Grant all my lands, lots houses & that I have in the town of Swansborough, to him, his heirs and assigns forever. ITEM: My will is that all my Negroes not yet mentioned be equally divided between my four daughters, Experience, Desire, Elizabeth & Ioaner (Iona?) as they shall arrive of age or marry, and until such time, the Negroes to be at the discretion of my executors to hire them our or not, as they shall think most advantageous, to them, their heirs and assigns forever. ITEM: I give to my daughter Experience Grant one bay mare called Diment to her, her heirs and assigns forever. ITEM: I give to Benajah Grant or Simson, one cow & calf, on e young sorrel horse, one ewe and lamb, one sow & pigs, my gun, shoe & knee buckles & stock buckle to him, his heirs and assigns. ITEM: My will and desire is that all the estate, both real and personal, not5 already mentioned, to be sold by executors, either at private or public sale to enable them to pay my debts and after my debts are all paid, I desire the moneys and incomes of the Negroes here should be applied towards bringing up my four daughters, Experience, Desire, Elizabeth & Ioaner (Iona?). Last of all, I constitute and appoint my friend George Mitchell and son John Shiver & Jim Slade attest Solomon Charles Grant my executors, revoking all other wills by me made, acknowledging this only to be my last, in Witness whereunto set my hand and fixed my seal this the 10th Feb. 1791. Reuben Grant (seal) Signed sealed and acknowledged by the Testator as his will in the presence of us the subscribers: Rigdon Pitts Ezrah Hawkins Benajah (his X mark) Grant Onslow County: January Term 1793,presents Edward Ward, Esq., Chairman and the rest of the Justices for said county, when the within mentioned last will and testament of the Reuben Grant, Esq., deed was duly proven before the court by the oath of Rigdon Pitts, one of the subscribing witnesses thereto, William Slade & John Spicer Esquire, two of the executors therein named appeared before the court and was duly qualified by taking the usual oath of an Executor.
