This file was contributed for use in the North Carolina USGenWeb Archives by: Beverly Cole ============================================================================ Record of Wills, Book A 1800-1825 Onslow County, North Carolina In the name of God, Amen: I, John Hammond of the County of Onslow and State of North Carolina, although in the enjoyment of a tolerable share of health and in the possession of my rational faculties, reflecting on the mortality that is prevalent among mankind and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, I have thought it prudent and advisable to constitute, make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following, (viz.): First, believing in the immortality of the soul, I wish for willingness to resign it into the hands of the Almighty Being who furnished it and as to my body, let it be buried at the discretion of my executors. 2nly: It is my earnest will and desire as to my estate with which it has pleased God to bless me, be appointed and disposed of in the following manner, (viz.): 1st, that all my just debts and funeral expences be honestly and punctually paid. 1st: I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Esther Hammond all my land whereon I now live, one bed, one Negro woman named Gin aged about thirty five, one Negro boy by the name of Isaac aged about fourteen years, one chest, one spinning wheel, one loom, one yoke of oxen, one cow and calf, three heifers, one linen wheel, one plow and gear, one beaufit and crockery, one pine table, two ewes, and kitchen furniture, two sows and pigs and nine shoats, which is my will and desire that she shall have during her natural life and then be disposed of as I shall hereafter direct. 2nd: I give and bequeath unto my son Washington Hammond all my lands whereon I now live containing two hundred and eighty five acres, be the same more or less, one bed and furniture, one chest, three hoes, but I reserve the right of land for my wife her lifetime. 3rd: I give and bequeath unto my daughter Merenda Scott one bay horse, one bed, one chest, one pot, one cow and calf, which I have heretofore lent her. 4th: I give and bequeath unto my daughter Rebecca Hammond one bed and bedstead and furniture, one black walnut chest, two ewes and all remaining cattle of my stock except one yoke of oxen at the death of my wife, also three chairs, one seder table, one wollen and one linen wheel at the death of my wife also, one pot, one tea kettle, one loom. 5th: I give and bequeath unto my son John H. Hammond, one Negro woman by the name Gin aged thirty five years, one bed and furniture, one yoke of oxen at the death of my wife, two ewes, one blue pine table, one hand mill, one pair of stulyards, three chairs, one beaufet at the death of my wife, one three gallon jug. 6th: I give and bequeath unto my son Edward G. Hammond one Negro boy by the name of Isaac aged fourteen years at the death of my wife, also one bed and furniture at my decease. 7th: I give and bequeath unto my daughter Margaret Littleton one bed and bedstead, two cows and calves, which I have lent them heretofore, two chairs, also it is my will and desire that my two youngest sons John H. Hammond, Edward G. Hammond act as my executors. In testamony whereof I have hereunto affixed my hand and seal February 23rd, 1823.
