This file was contributed for use in the North Carolina USGenWeb Archives by: Beverly Cole ============================================================================ Record of Wills, Book A 1800-1825 Onslow County, North Carolina In the name of God, Amen: I, Jonathan Hibbs (Sr.) of Onslow County in the State of North Carolina, being of sound mind & memory & calling to mind the mortality of my body, that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make & ordain this my last will & testament in manner & form following: I commit my soul unto the hands of God that gave it, hoping through the mercy of blessed Saviour to receive free pardon of all my sins & my body I commit to the earth from whence it was taken & as to such worldly estate as it hath pleased God to endow me with, I dispose of in the following manner, to wit: First: I give to my three sons, Wilkins Hibbs, Jonathan Hibbs (Jr.) & David Hibbs, the land I now possess on New River, being the land I bought of Joseph Morgan, to be equally divided quantity & quality. The east side of my said land I give & bequeath to my son Wilkins Hibbs, to him and his heirs forever. 2ndly: I give to my son Jonathan Hibbs (Jr.) the land joining my son Wilkins Hibbs, to him & his heirs forever. 3rdly: I give & bequeath to my son David Hibbs the westerly part of said land which said land I leave to be laid off that each child may have a privilege of the river, to him & his heirs & assigns forever. 4thly: I give to my beloved wife Anna Sophia Hibbs her lifetime on the aforesaid land given. 5thly: I give to my wife Anna Sophia Hibbs a Negro boy named Cuff during her natural life & after her death, I leave the aforesaid Negro to be equally divided among my sons, (viz.), John Hibbs, Wilkins Hibbs, Jonathan Hibbs and David Hibbs, to them & their heirs forever. 6thly: I give to my wife Negro girl named Darkis & after her decease, I leave her to my daughter Elizabeth Hibbs, to her & her heirs forever. 7thly: I give to my wife a Negro girl named Rose during her natural life & after her decease, I leave her to my daughter Ann Hibbs, to her & her heirs & assigns forever. 8thly: I give to my daughter Elizabeth Hibbs one feather bed, one cow & calf, to her & her heirs & assigns forever. 9thly: I give & bequeath to my daughter Ann Hibbs one featherbed, one cow & calf, to her and her heirs & assigns forever. 10thly: I give to my son John Hibbs the plantation whereon he now lives on Bogue Sound containing one hundred & two acres, to him & his heirs forever. 11thly: I give to my son Jonathan Hibbs (Jr.) one mare colt called Gimme (probably Jimmy), to him & his heirs forever. 12thly: I give to my son David Hibbs one colt called Pleasant, to him and his heirs forever. 13thly: I give to my wife all the rest of my personal estate during her life and after her decease, I give the same amongst all my children, to them & their heirs & assigns forever. Lastly, I nominate & appoint William Wilkins Taylor executor & my wife executrix of this my last will, revoking all other will or wills by me made, ratifying & confirming this and no other to be my last will & testament, in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal this 31st day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred & eighty nine. Daniel Newton Elijah Newton John Mitchell Onslow County: April Term 1790, the will of Jonathan Hibbs (Sr.) decedent was proved before the county court aforesaid by the oath of Daniel Newton & Mrs. Anna Sophia Hibbs & William W.
