This file was contributed for use in the North Carolina USGenWeb Archives by: Beverly Cole ============================================================================ Record of Wills, Book A 1800-1825 Onslow County, North Carolina In the name of God, Amen: I, John Spicer of the County of Onslow, Planter, being weak in body but in perfect mind and memory, thanks be unto God for the same, calling unto mind the mortality of my body (torn out) do make and ordain this my last will and testament , that is to say principally and first of all, I recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God who gave it and my body to the earth to be buried with decent Christian burial at the discretion of my executors, nothing doubting but at the general resurrection I shall receive the same again by the power of Almighty God and as touching such worldly estate wherewith it has been pleased God to bless me with in this life, I give, devise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form: FIRST, I give and bequeath unto my dearly beloved wife Esther Spicer my riding horse and chair, one bed and furniture, five cows and calves, all my stock of hogs, also all my household furniture that will not be given as legacies, also I lend unto her during her natural life or widowhood, seven Negroes by name Old and Young Daniel, Topsail Flower Rose and her daughters, Sall & Peter, and my plantation where I now live during the same time. ITEM: I give unto my son John Spicer (Jr.) all and singular that tract of land that I bought of Jeremiah Fonvielle on the mouth of Stones Creek, two Negroes, Little Jack that I purchased of Avirett and Old Sall, one bed and furniture, one table, four chairs, five ewes and lambs, all given heretofore that he has now in his possession, to him and his heirs forever. ITEM: Also, I give my beloved son James Spicer the one half of the land where my mother lives, she to enjoy it during her life time, also the one half of the three other pieces joining the lands my mother is to have her life time, one of them a six hundred & forty acre tract joining Andrew Fulwood plantation and that place or parcel of land I purchased of James Gillespie on the head of Turkey Creek containing two hundred acres, & two acres that I purchased of James Hobs together with the mill seat and one pair of mill stones ,two Negroes named Tully and Murich one horse that is called his, one feather bed and furniture, to him and his heirs forever. ITEM: I also give to my well beloved son Jeremiah Spicer the other half of that same lands given to James Spicer, two Negroes aforesaid named Jack and a girl named Charlot, one piece or parcel of land on New River that I purchased of George Carpenter, one horse named Harry, one feather bed & furniture, to him and his heirs forever. ITEM: I also give to my well beloved daughter Milia (Millie?) Spicer six Negroes named as follows: a fellow named Tom, Chany, Meriah, Whittenton, Bird and Little Gabe, one young two-year-old mare Nancy's Filly, one feather bed and furniture, to her and her heirs forever. ITEM: Also I give and bequeath unto my well beloved daughter Catta Spicer, six Negroes named Antony, Leah, Sarah & Mansfield, Mitchell & Huldy, one young mare Cats Filly, one feather bed and furniture, to her & her heirs forever. ITEM: Also, I give and bequeath to my son Elzey Spicer the following lands, one tract adjoining the place where I now live lying to the eastward of it, one hundred and fifty acres by estimation, joining Realses land now Danson and half of Ashes Island to be laid off from the east end and (torn out) all of my part of the land that belonged to Elzey Spicer, decd, one Negro fellow named Sitteo, Negro named Orris and her child Tamer and Old Gabe, one mare called Nance, one feather bed & furniture, to him and his heirs forever. ITEM: I also give and bequeath unto my son Zephaniah Spicer the plantation where I now live after the decease or marriage of my wife, the one half of Ashes Island to be laid off from the west end, Negro named John, young Daniel, Ephraim, Bitty, and Cato after the death of my mother, one feather bed and furniture, one horse colt that is Nance's, to him and his heirs forever. I also give that unto my seven children five sons & two daughters, John Spicer, James Spicer, Jeremiah Spicer, Elzey Spicer & Zepheneah Spicer, Millie Spicer & Catta Spicer all my lands on the banks that I bought of Jesse Clegg to be equally divided between them, to them and their heirs forever. I also give unto my five sons John Spicer, James Spicer, Jeremiah Spicer, Elza Spicer, & Zephenah Spicer all the remaining piny lands that has not been given heretofore, to be equally divided between them, all my stock of cattle that has not been given away I leave to be equally divided between my children & leave one horse called Champen and the remaining part of my stock of sheep to be sold, if there is more money wanting, one Negro fellow named Mace to be sold, but if there is no money wanting to discharge debts, I lend the Negro fellow Mace to my wife during her life or widowhood, also I lend her one mare called Cate, and all my tools during her life or widowhood and at her death, to be equally divided between all my children. I leave all the Negroes to continue on the plantation till next Christmas to finish my crop of corn & turpentine. I do hereby revoke and utterly disannul every other former will and testament, ratifying this to be my last will and testament, in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 22nd day of June one thousand eight hundred, and lastly I nominate and appoint my son John Spicer and John Fullwood my executors to this my last will and testament.
