ONSLOW COUNTY, NC - WILL BOOK A - Edward Ward, Sr., 7 Apr 1812 ----¤¤¤---- Record of Wills, Book A 1800-1825 Onslow County, North Carolina In the name of God, Amen: I Edward Ward Sr. of the State of North Carolina, Onslow County, being in sound mind and memory blessed be to God do make this my last will and testament in the manner and form following to-wit: First I recommend my soul to God who gave it, and my body to be decently buried at the discretion of my executors. 2nd: I give unto my daughter Athelia Fonvielle one feather bed and furniture more than what she has already received and I lend the use and labor of what Negroes she has in her possession during her life time, and at their death to be equally divided among her children the land she lives on is already given by a deed of gift what horses and cattle I have heretofore gave her with their increase I also leave to be divided at her death among her children. 3rd: I give unto my son Edward Ward (Jr.) to his heirs and assigns forever, the following lands (to-wit). The plantation he now lives on with the land adjoining containing six hundred and forty acres, patented by Stephen Howard with the improvements and privileges thereunto belonging one other piece laying in the fork of Duck Creek & Wolf Pit Swamp containing one hundred and sixty acres being the land Jones sold to Bacer Fonville on which there is a considerable cleared land with all the improvement thereto belonging one other piece laying in French Neck containing by estimation one hundred acres being the land I bought of William French one other piece laying on Duck Creek Branch and in the island called Duck Creek Island containing seventy five acres patented by self one other piece joining the land of the plantation he now lives on laying on both sides of the main road up Wolf Pitt Branch and from Wolf Pitt to Duck Creek containing about three hundred and forty acres which patent holds the most of the low land of Duck Creek one other piece containing two hundred acres by patent patented by my self where James Wilson formerly lived adjoining Capt. Hazzard lands, one other piece laying between Woodmile and Jumping Run Branch containing one hundred acres patented by self, all the above lands laying in the county of Onslow and on the east side of New River, one other piece containing one hundred and forty five acres laying on the west side of New River called Town Point land one other piece called the Cowpen Old Field with all the land laying on the Northwest side of the Cowpen Branch belonging to the Cow Pen land also about thirty or forty acres of said cow pen land laying on the westernmost part of said patent beginning at a large spruce pine on Wolf Pitt Swamp being the beginning of the above mentioned land that James Wilson formerly lived and Hazzard corner tree running up Wolf Pitt Swamp along Hazard line, it's gets against the head of a small drean that makes out of the Cow Pen Branch running between where the said Edward Ward has made two taskels then across to the head of said drain and down the said drain to the Coe Pen Branch thence along the Cow Pen Branch until it strikes the first line of the Wilson land then with that line to the beginning the Spruce Pine all the above mentioned pieces of land I give to my said son Edward Ward, Jr., with all the improvements privileges and appurtenances thereunto belonging to him and his heirs and assigns forever, free and clear of all incumberance whatever. 4th: I give to my son Edward following Negroes to him his heirs and assigns forever (to-wit) John, Cato, Josa, Bill, Hamman, Carese and her children, Flower and her children free and clear of all encumbrance with all the stock of horses and cattle household furniture that I left in his possession one bed accepted which I want Elish Erreson to have. 5th: I give unto my daughter Fanny Muntfort to her, her heirs assigns forever four shares or logs of land on Quipels Point land where she now lives that I bought as follows one share of Joseph Montfort, one of Dr. Wm French, one of Henry G. Montfort, one of Redding Jones, with all the improvements and appurtenances thereunto belonging also two hundred dollars to be raised out of the monies arising from the sale of my estate, to enable her to buy one more share of said land. 6th: I give to my daughter Fanny Montfort the Negroes she has now in possession with three Negro women named Amey, Miniby, & Mollie to her, her heirs and assigns forever with all the stock she has in possession with all the furniture she has heretofore received. 7th: I give to my grandson Edward Montfort one Negro boy Virgil to him his heirs and assigns forever. 8th: I give unto my granddaughter Mary Montfort daughter of Fanny one Negro girl named Leah to her, her heirs and assigns forever. 9th: It is further my will and desire that my Negro woman named Easter live with which of my children she may think proper to live with at her own discretion. 10th: I give unto my grandson Edward Fonville that part of my Hallover plantation that lays to the Southward and Westward of a cross line below the large mulberry tree running from Houseons Creek as the fence goes to the sound a straight course to him, his heirs and assigns forever. 11th: I give unto my grandson Brice Fonville his heirs and assigns forever one part of my Hallover land the east and beginning at Houston Creek at a cross fence below a large Bulberry tree running as the fence goes to the end of said fence thence the nearest course to the sound from the end of the fence thence along the sound, easterly to Hancock line thence along Hancock line reference to my deeds will show the cause to said Creek or gut, I further give the said Brice one other piece of land laying on the opposite side of said Houston's Creek called Mark Field and from the upper part of Mark Field at a dreane which forms a ledge off Bond that runs a northward westerly course up to the road that goes to his fathers from my house a cart road a line to be made by my executor agreeable to this direction if not done in my life time I further give my grandson Brice the plantation where I now live adjoining the said mark field with the houses and improvements also give the said Brice one half of the back land adjoining the aforesaid land the turpentine trees excepted for one year (?) of the turpentine on them -ternly excepted, the above piece of land I give to the said Brice his heirs and assigns forever. 12th: I give my grandson Brice Fonville one feather bed and furniture one small trunk one small chest and the chairs about the house and kitchen furniture one plow & two hoes & two axes two grubbing hoes my cooper tools one cart six earthen plates two dishes and knives & forks that is about the house, one looking glass, and glass ware about the house two sows and pigs. 13th: I give to my grandson Thomas Jefferson Fonville all the land that lies between the land I have given to his brother Brice and a large swamp adjoining his father land running up to the same road as his brother Brice line and I give the said Thomas the other half of the back land adjoining the before mentioned land to him his heirs and assigns forever, with the same exception of the trees & turpentine as his brother Brice the back land to be divided lengthways. 14th: I give unto Elish Erreson one feather bed two duck blankets & two sheets, two cows and calves two sows and pigs to him his heirs and assigns forever. 15th: My will and desire further is that all my hands be kept together until the present crop of turpentine and corn together with the tarkil on hand should be finished and got together and after given my grandson Brice one half of the corn provided he attend to and work in the crop until it is finished I wish to be sold at the discretion of my executors and applies as hereafter mentioned. 16th: It is further my will and desire that my son Edward & daughter Fanny should be allowed reasonable hire for such of their Negroes respectfully as may be employed in the crop of turpentine, tar, & corn according to the time they are employed. 17th: further my will and desire is that all my real and personal estate that is not here willed away be sold by my executors and after my just debts are paid then and with what money notes accounts together with the sale of the naval stores before mentioned with one half of the corn after paying my daughter Fanny the two hundred dollars as before mentioned, be equally divided between my son Edward Ward, my daughter Fanny, and my grandson Brice Fonville. I hereby constitute and appoint my son Edward Ward & my worthy friend William Montfort executors to this my last will and testament in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this April 7th day one thousand eight hundred & twelve.
