Multiple authors. Chapter III. "Settlement and Early History" by Ruth Blackwelder. In 1740 only a few white families were scattered along the Hico (Hyco), the Eno, and the Haw rivers in the area that became Orange county. There were not twenty taxables in that region in 1748, but by 1751 Governor Gabriel Johnston reported that settlers were "flocking in," mostly from Pennsylvania. Alexander Mebane, Orange county's first sheriff, returned 1,113 tithables for the years 1752 and 1753, a figure which would indicate a total population of approximately 4,000 when the county was formed in 1752. By 1767 Orange had the largest population of any county in North Carolina. The great migration from Pennsylvania to Piedmont Carolina came in the middle of the eighteenth century. Scotch-Irish and German immigrants, finding the price of land too high for them in Pennsylvania, journeyed southward along the "Great Wagon Road" through the Shenandoah valley to Carolina. ....... . Alexander Mebane, the first sheriff of the county, owned land along Cain Creek in 1756.... There were Scotch-Irish in eastern Orange--in the Little river and New Hope creek sections.....Germans held the land west of the Haw river....John Faust had land on Cain creek.... Quakers constituted a considerable portion of the early population of Orange county....Quakers settled north of Hillsboro but they were most numerous in the Cain creek and the Stinking Quarter creek areas, in present Almance, Chatham and Randolph counties. Jonathan Lindley of the Cain creek section and William Courtney of Hillsboro were prominent pioneers of the Quaker faith. ...... The three largest landowners in 1800 were WILLIAM CAIN who had 4,417 acres, Richard Bennehan with 4,065 acres, and William Strudwick with 4,000..... Orange county and the parish of St. Matthew were formed in 1752 from the western portions of Granville, Johnston and Bladen counties. The organization came twenty-three years after the crown purchased the Carolinas from the lords proprietors and two years before the outbreak of the French and Indian War. Phenomenal growth in population between 1740 and 1752 made a new county a necessity. It was organized for convenience of the new inhabitants, to shorten their travel over poor roads, to make it easier for them to get to their county seat. The county lay in Lord Granville's district and was named to honor William III of the House of Orange, who ruled England from 1689 to 1702.....There have been many subtractions from Orange county. Originally it included the present counties of Orange, Chatham, Caswell, Person and Almance and also portions of Wake, Guilford, Randolph, Rockingham, Durham, and Lee. ************ HISTORICAL SKETCHES ************* From "Historical Sketches of North Carolina" by John Hill Wheeler; Regional Pub.
