First Source: In 1781, David Fannin, Col. Com'g his Majesties Loyal Militia, &c. named John HASTINGS (of Orange County, NC) named as a Lieut. in the British Colonial Militia under the command of Col Fannin. Source: Clark, Walter. "The State Records of North Carolina", v. XII pp. 196-201. Pub: Nash Brothers, Book and Job Printers, Goldsboro, NC, 1906. From Second Source: Correspondence of Col. Robert Burton, Patriot dated Ap. 8th, 1782 Hillsboro. "Permitted Joseph and John Hastings to come to me at 4 O'Clock....Gave permission and protection to Joseph and John Hastings to remain at their respective homes until called on." then several pages later in same book "Joseph Hastings, of Orange, is hereby permitted to remain with his family until called on by me or the Commander in Chief for the time being, he holding himself in readiness to obey Such call at a Moment's Warning, after which he is to perform Such Services as shall be assigned to him to the best of his abilities, by which he shall be entitled to a Pardon for all Treasons and misprisons of Treasons, and meantime this shall be his protect. (signed) T. Burke. Source: Clark, Walter. "The State Records of North Carolina", v. XVI p. 586. Pub: Nash Brothers, Book and Job Printers, Goldsboro, NC, 1906. T. Burke who signed the permit of Joseph Hastings apparently was Thomas Burke, the Patriot Colonial Governor of NC
