ORANGE COUNTY, NC - CEMETERIES - Partin Cemetery ----¤¤¤¤---- This cemetery is located at corner of Piney Mountain Road and Louis Armstrong Court in Chapel Hill. It is in a chain-link fence that has been broken or bent down on the Piney Mountain Road segment beside the gate. It does not appear that anyone is caring for this cemetery. In the spring, summer, and fall, the vegetation covers most of the stones. There is a small amount of trash in the cemetery. I pass this cemetery every day and feel sad that it is in such condition. Because I am concerned about the potential for vandalism and further deterioration here, I decided to survey it and do a little research on its history. If anyone is related to those buried here and knows more than this, please post the information because I do not know anymore than what I have posted here. The cemetery appears to have African-American people buried in it. In the 1920 and 1930 census, Monroe Partin, who is buried here, is listed as owning property in Chapel Hill off Orange Church Road. I also found a Monroe Partin as a 20 year old listed as a servant in the 1880 census in Orange Co. I do not know any further information on Monroe Partin or this land or cemetery, but it appears to be quite old, based upon the number of field stones marking graves in the cemetery. (I surveyed this cemetery on 12/13/2003. Names listed together are on the same marker.) SURNAMES: PARTIN, BESS, HATLEY, BURRELL, BREWER. There are at least 25 field stones marking graves in this cemetery. Nancy E. Partin b4/16/1868, d2/22/1958 Monroe L.
