Martha Bumpass to Sophia Gates

Know all men by these presents that I
Martha Bumpass of Orange County North Carolina
for and in consideration of the natural love and
affection that I bear to my Kinswoman Sophia
wife of Henry T Gates and for the further consider
=ation of Ten Dollars to me in hand paid by the
said Henry T Gates do hereby bargain & Sell
release alien & convey unto the said Henry T.
Gates for the Sole & separate use of Sophia
his wife & the heirs of her body free from all liabil
=ity for his debts or contracts the tract of
land whereon I now live containing two hun
=dred & Sixty Eight acres more or less on the
waters of little River adjoining John B. Leathers
William Cain & others To have and to hold
to him & his heirs forever for the sole & separate
use of Sophia Gates & her heirs aforesaid from
& after the day of my death and not before
and for the further consideration of Ten
Dollars to me in hand paid by the said
henry T. Gates I do hereby sell & convey
& after my death do hereby direct my Executor
etc to deliver to the said Henry T. Gates for the
sole & separate use of his wife Sophia & her
children three Negro Slaves to wit Ned now
about forty years of age. Peter about thirty
& Charlotte, now about eighteen years & her future
increase also all of my Household & Kitchen fur
niture. Two Horses her choice & my Rockaway
All of the above mentioned property both real &
personal is to remain in my possession & under my
control as long as I may live and then the said
Henry T. Gates shall take possession of the land and
the personal property and shall hold and use the
same for the sole and Separate use of his wife Sophia
for & dureing her natural life and after her death
the land shall descend to her heirs in fee simple
forever. In Testimony whereof I have hereunto set my
hand & Seal this 13th day of August AD 1857

Gift was duly acknowledged before me George
Laws Clerk of Orange County Court by Martha
Bumpass the Subscriber thereto let it be Registered
together with this certificate 13th August 1857
