Gates of the County of Orange and H. M. Latta of the County of Person both of the state of N.C. Witnesseth that the said Henry T. Gates for and in consideration of the sum of forty three hundred dollars in hand paid by the said A.M. Latta the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged the said Gates hath this day bargained and sold and doth hereby give grant bargain & sell to the said H. M. Latta his heirs & assigns forever one tract or parcel of land situated lying in the County of Orange on the waters of South Fork of Little River Beginning at a persimmon tree on the North side of said Little river running thence North ten chains to a stake on Mrs. N. G. Coggins line thence seventeen chains & fifty links to a sour wood joining the lands of George T. Coggins Dec'd thence South seven Chains & sixty five links George T. Coggins line thence down the river with John Tillys line to the first station Containing by estimation twenty one acres more or less Being the tract on which the South Lowell Mills are situated with all the machinery attached to or in any wise belonging to the said premises whether fixed or detached consisting of grist mill wool carding machine cotton gin Black smith tools set of saw mill irons including saw lot of old irons ? to the use & benefit of the said Latta his heirs & assigns forever the said Henry T. Gates doth hereby warrant and forever defend the right & title to said land & property to the said Latta his heirs & assigns forever against the claims of any & all persons. Gates (seal) North Carolina ) Probate Court Orange County ) 16th Sept 1869 Be it remembered that on this 16th day of Sept 1869 the foregoing Deed was offered to me George Laws Judge of Probate for said county and admitted to probate in the following manner Samuel H. Johnson being sworn testified that Henry T. Gates the grantor herein named had fled the state and his present residence was unknown and that Moses Leathers one of the subscribing witnesses thereto was dead, that he was well acquainted with the hand writing of Henry T. Gates and Moses Leathers from often seeing them write and their signatures to the foregoing deed is in their own proper handwriting Chesley P. Warren being sworn testified that Mary M. Tilly the other subscribing witness had removed from this part of the Country and her present residence was unknown that he is well acquainted with her hand writing from often seeing her write and that her signature as subscribing witness was in her own proper hand writing. It is considered by the Court that said Deed is duly proved. Therefore let the said deed and this certificate be registered Geo Laws Probate Judge
