This file was contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives by: Jacqueline Tilley Wilkerson jwilkerson@visionet.org ==================================================================== James Laws to Elisha Umstead February 23, 1829 Orange County Deed Book 23, Page 453 This Indenture made this 23rd day of February in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and twenty nine Between James Laws of the County of Orange and State of North Carolina of the one part and Elisha Umstead of the County & State aforesaid of the other part, Witnesseth Whereas George Laws the elder died in the year 1800 and by his last Will and testament duly executed to convey land gave to his daughter Elizabeth for and during her natural life and at her death to his son William Laws One certain tract of land whereon he died and where the said Elizabeth Laws now lives on Flat River in said County and whereon the said William Laws departed this life on or about the year 1817 leaving his Sister Elizabeth him surviving and by his last Will and testament duly executed to convey land he gave to his son James Laws his reversionary interest in and to said tract of land - Now I James Laws of the County & State aforesaid for and in consideration of the Sum of Four hundred dollars to me in hand paid before the signing & Sealing of these presents hath given, granted, bargained sold released, confirmed, and conveyed and by these presents doth give grant bargain sell release confirm and convey to the said Elisha Umstead his heirs and assigns forever all that tract of land Whereon Elizabeth Laws now lives lying in the County of Orange on the east side of Flat River, bounded by Flat river the land of Elisha Umstead the Guess tract and Hillsborough Road to him the said Elisha Umstead his heirs & assigns forever with all and singular the appurtenances thereunto belonging or in any wise appurtaining after the death of Elizabeth Laws who has and holds a life estate in said tract of land and I the said James Laws for myself my heirs, Executors, Administrators & assigns doth warrant and will forever defend the title of the above granted and bargained land to him the said Elisha Umstead his heirs and assigns forever against the just claim of all and any person whatsoever after the death of the Said Elizabeth Laws In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my Seal the day and date first above written Signed, Sealed & delivered ) James Laws (seal) In presence of ) Daniel Umstead ) Orange County May Term 1827 Jos H Morgan ) The Execution of the within Deed J U Roberts ) was duly proved in Open Court by the Oath of Joseph H Morgan a subscribing Witness thereto & Ordered to be registered Test J Taylor C C
