	“THOMAS CLARK to John Ray. This indenture made this 30th day of August 
in the year of our Lord 1798 between THOMAS CLARK of the County of Orange and 
state of North Carolina of the one part, and John Ray, esq. of the county and 
state aforesaid of the other part. Witnesseth that the said THOMAS CLARK, for 
and consideration of the sum of six hundred and fifty dollars to him in hand 
paid by the said John Ray, the receipt whereof the said THOMAS CLARK doth 
hereby acknowledge, hath given, granted, bargained and sold, a lien ____, 
released and confirmed and by these presents doth give, grant, bargain and sell 
a lien ____ release and confirm unto the said John Ray, his heirs and assigns 
forever, one undivided half of all that part of land situated and lying and 
being in the county aforesaid on the waters of Little River, and bounded as 
follows, to wit:

	“Beginning at the northwest corner of James Wilkinson’s, formerly Ralph 
William’s land, running to a black oak, then east to a black oak, then north to 
a post oak on the said John Ray’s, formerly James Ray’s line, then west along 
said line and along James Clark's line to a black oak, thence south to the 
first station, containing three [hundred] and seventy-eight acres, be the same 
more or less, it being a tract of land conveyed by John Rutherford to THOMAS 
CLARK, deceased, by deed bearing date the second day of August in the thirtieth 
year of the reign of King George the second, King of England., reference being 
thereto had will more fully appear, together with all and singular the profits, 
the hereditaments and appurtenances thereunto belonging or in anywise 
appertaining, and the inversions and reversions, remainder and remainders, ?
renti ipus? And profits thereof and also all the estate rights title, interest, 
property claim and demand whatsoever of him the said THOMAS CLARK, of, in and 
to the premises aforesaid, to have and to hold the said one undivided half of 
said tract of land and premises described as above unto him the said John Ray, 
his heirs and assigns forever, and the said THOMAS CLARK for himself, his 
heirs, executors and administrators, the said one undivided half of the 
aforesaid tract of land and all and singular the premises hereby bargained and 
sold with the appurtenances against the claim of all and all manner of persons 
whatsoever unto the said John Ray, his heirs and assigns will well and truly 
warrant and forever defend.”

	“In witness whereof, the said THOMAS CLARK hath hereunto set his hand 
and affixed his seal, the day and year first above written. THOMAS CLARK. 
Signed sealed and delivered in the presence of William Clark, Jesse Clark. Deed 
was duly proved in open court by the oath of William Clark and Jesse Clark, two 
subscribing witnesses and ordered to be registered. November term 1798.
