Gossum n/a December 17, 2011, 5:30 pm This letter was written by Rebecca Dickey of Orange County, NC, to her nephew, John Woods, who had migrated to Hickman County, Kentucky. Mr. Woods' wife was Caroline Carr. North Carolina Orange County, February 23, 1828 Dear Nephew, I now take my pen in hand to inform that I am well at present. Hoping these lines will find enjoying the like blessing and that I received your letter on the 14th of this inst. I would be glad the next letter you rite me that you would send me word how Jane is and how David & Allexander and where they are living and how they are doing and the names of your wife and daughters. I was glad when I heard that your uncle John Woods had taken Talitha/Latitia and William and I hope they will do well. You wrote to me to know how much I had against your Father's estate. The note is for one hundred dollars dated December 26th, 1825 bearing interest from the date. There has a very sudden upturn taken place since you left this Country with increase in trade. Wheat is worth 50 cents per bushel, corn is from seventy-five cents to $1.12 1/2 cents per barrel, cotton 2 dollars per hundred, coffee from fifteen to 20 cents per pound, shugar 12 1/2. We had a very good crop of wheat and corn this year. Your Uncle William and Aunt Nelly are getting very frail. The most of your friends are all well. Your Cousin Lindsey and Martha desires to be remembered to you and your wife and family and to your Uncle Thomas. ___ their friends. They are all anxious know about Jane where she is liveing. I would not advise you to direct any more letters to Hillsborough as we never can get a letter out of this office until it is advertised. You can direct your letter to Cedar Grove Post office at Col. Allison's or to Oak Land Post office at Esq. Nickles. When you write again give an account of that Country and of trade how it is carried on in that country. I have heard that Daniel Baldridge lives in that Country. If you have seen or heard anything from them I want you to tell me how his first wife's children are and how they are doing. I wish to conclude by subscribing myself your affectionate Aunt. I desire to be remembered to Jane and David and Allexander and Arch and Rachel and to all the rest the black ones.
