And thinking, that by his orders, for that particular service, they should be exempt from their tour of duty, your petitioners are of opinion that your Honorable Body, will always act consistently and confirm a Generals orders, as much one day as another, and considering and believing that your ears are always open and ready to hear the prayers of your petitioners as also to grant them all reasonable requests which their request is at this time, is that those men be ordered to serve out their three months, as doth their fellow citizens and your petitioners, as in duty bound shall ever pray. Baugh, William Ware, Thomas Moreland, Thomas Kirkland, Francis Disern [Desern], John Colter [Coulter], David Geer, William Coulther [Coulter], Thomas Coulter, Matthew Spanow, Thos. Smith, John Taylor, and Jeremiah Horton. Transcribers note: During the 1779 time period, Orange Co was part of the Hillsborough Military District. The militia men’s tour of duty was three months. All men from age 16 to 50 were expected to participate. After being drafted or voluntarily enlisting the person could not be called again until every had served and his rotation came again. The petitioners were all men from Orange County. A few of the men were beyond the military age of 50; John Patterson a judge, John Marcum, Thomas Moreland and William Coulther. Most of the rest of the men signing this petition have revolutionary war service records.
