W.J. Freeland The Standard of Raleigh, July 30, 1862 DEATH OF CAPT. WILLIAM J. FREELAND CAPTAIN WILLIAM JOHNSON FREELAND of Orange County, was among the first to volunteer for the defence of of Southern rights. In his short but brilliant career he won laurels for himself and the State to which he belonged. Many of North Carolina's noble sons have fallen on Virginia soil, but none more brave, none more beloved or regretted than he. By his noble generosity, he had not only the love of his own company, buty was the favorite of the whole regiment. He was second to none in ability, always faithful in the discharge of his duty. He fell wounded on the 31st of May, at the battle of Seven Pines, was taken prisoner and carried to Fortress Monroe where he died on 21st of June. His nurse treated him with marked attention, on account of his private worth, and he was buried with Masonic and military honors. His hope of heaven was bright. He was a member of the Baptist Church.
