C.] a son of JUDGE BATTLE, died at Middletown in Maryland, in the early morning of the second day of October last. His left ankle had been shattered by a minnie ball at the battle at South Mountain upon Sunday the 14th of September. Having been taken prisoner, he was carried to Middletown in the evening of the same day. The wound rendered amputation necessary. After it had been undergone, the young soldier seemed recovering, but unfavorable symptoms came on, and having lingered several days, he died. Young Battle had been reared in the quiet village of Chapel Hill, and at the time of his death was in his 22nd year. He had been privileged to obtain the whole of his education under the eye of a devoted mother, and thus it was that his personal gallantry and good intellect were graced even to manhood by a rare and admirable candour and modesty. The war found him teaching at Oxford, and a sense of duty to North Carolina carried him into the army. Like many of his class in society he had no commission in the service and died a private. [PRIVATE JUNIUS BATTLE was a member of Company D, the 12th Infantry Regiment.] File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/nc/orange/military//other/battle107mt.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/ncfiles/ File size: 1.9 Kb
