NC served from 1 July 1780, three months as captain of a company of militia in Colonel TINNING'S NC regiment, and was in the battle of GATES DEFEAT. He served from 15 June 1781, six months as captain of a company of Dragoon, part of the time under Major McCLARY was in the battle of EUTAW SPRINGS and a skirmish at RAFT SWAMP; he served in the summer of 1782, three months as captain of a company of Dragoons, Colonel William LYTLE'S regiment. The soldier, Baxter KING married in the month of January 1778, Ellen JOHNSTON, who was born 1 May 1759, place not listed. They were married at the residence of her father, George JOHNSTON in the Hawfields, Orange Co. North Carolina. The name of her mother is not known/shown. Baxter KING died 10 March 1801. His widow Ellen KING was allowed pension of her application executed 9 Sept 1839, then a resident of Chapel Hill, Orange Co. NC The widow, Ellen KING, stated that the family record was taken away by some of her older children, and that she did not remember the ages of all of them, but they were born about two years apart, except the second and third which was not quite two years. The following are the names of their children as found in the claim. John born in the month of January 1779 Margaret died when an infant in the spring of 1781 with smallpox Margaret Mary Hannah born 24 August 1787 Nancy Polly Elizabeth born in the year 1792 Johnston Nathaniel I. James JOHNSTON, brother of the widow Ellen KING, was born 13 Dec 1763 and in 1842 was living in the Hawfields, Orange Co.N.C. Hannah LOYDD and Rebecca ANDREWS, sisters of the soldier, Baxter KING, were both in 1842 living in Orange Co N.C.
