State of North Carolina Orange County On this the 20th day of May A.D. 1833, personally appeared before the Court of Pleas & Quarter sessions for the County afores it bring a Court of record show sitting, Andrew McBroom, a resident of the County & state aforesaid, aged seventy eight years in July last, as he beleive & who being first duly sworn according to said, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June 7th 1832. That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers & served as herein stated. In the year 1776, as he thinks, the declarant volunteered as a private in the militia of North Carolina, for a tour of three months and was attached to a company which was organized in the Town of Hillsboro; under the command of Capt. Hugh Tinner, Lieutenant William Williams, and Ensign Saml Thompson. From Hillsborough, he was marched on what was called the "Scotch expedition," to Fayetteville, N.C., one or more regiments having been organized under the command of Col. Thaxton & Lieutenant Batlis(?) -- to which declarant's company belonged destined for that service. After arriving at Fayetteville, he was marched into the vicinity Hack(?) into the Town without having an opportunity of mutiny tho in any an battle -- the Scotch Forces in that quarter having been recently defeated by Govr Caswell; they surrendered to our forces, as soon as we found them -- From Fayetteville, the object of the expedition being accomplished, the declarant was marched to Hillsborough & there discarged from the tour of three months for which he volunteered. He thinks that Col. Thaxton discharged him; he hath lost his discharge many years since as he hath all his other discharges -- as he fought for the liberties of his country & not to obtain evidences of service with a view to pecuniary advantage. The declarant again volunteered as a private in the militia of North Carolina, for a tour of three months -- in the year 1778 or 1779, as he thinks - - and was attached to a company which was organized in the Town of Hillsboro, N.C. under Capt William Williams--Lieutenant John Taylor & Ensign Saml Thompson; and was destined for service against the Indians in the western part of North Carolina. One or more regiments marched from Hillsboro on this occasion under the immediate command of Col. Ramsey [There appears to be something missing here, after the end of the page, as it does not make sense.] ment, that the above named applicant was a Revolutionary soldier and sword as his statis. And tho said cannot further certifies, that it appears to them, that Samuel Paisley, who hath subscribed & sworn to the above certificate is a clergyman residing in the County of Orange aforesaid and is a credible person; and that James McBane and John Taylor, who have likewise subscribed & sworn to the same, and credible persons, resident in said County -- and that their statement is entitled to credit. I, John Taylor, Clerk of the Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions of the County aforesd do hereby certify the above to contain the original proceedings of said Court, in the matter of the application of Andrew McBroom, for a pension.
