William Williams and Ensign Samuel Thompson. From Hillsborough he was marched on what was called the ‘Scotch Expedition’ to Fayetteville, NC one or more regiments having been organized under the command of Col. Thaxton and Adjutant Butler to which declarant’s company belonged, destined for that service.” “After arriving at Fayetteville, he was marched into the vicinity and back into the town without having an opportunity of meeting the enemy in battle. The Scotch Tories in that quarter having been recently defeated by Governor Caswell. They surrendered to our forces as soon as we found them. From Fayetteville, the object of our expedition being accomplished, the declarant was marched to Hillsborough and there discharged from the tour of three months for which he volunteered. He thinks that Col. Thaxton discharged him. He hath lost his discharge many years since, as he has all his other discharges, as he fought for the liberty of his country and not obtain evidence with a view to procuring advantage.” “The declarant again volunteered as a private in the militia of North Carolina for a tour of three months in the year 1778 or 1779 [the Cherokee expedition was in the summer of 1776], as he thinks and was attached to a company which was organized in the town of Hillsborough under Captain William Williams, and Lt. John Taylor and Ensign Samuel Thompson and was destined for service against the Indians in the western part of North Carolina.
