When he entered the service in April 1781 as a substitute for Andrew Mitchell for a 3 month tour in a company commanded by William Douglas as the captain and under the command of Colonel Guilford Dudley. Applicant states that the regiment under Colonel Dudley marched from Orange into Chatham, where it was actively engaged in watching and keeping down the Tories in that county, constantly engaged in pillage and murder of the Whigs.” “Applicant them marched with his regiment from Chatham into the county of Randolph where he was principally engaged in scouring the country in pursuit of the Tories of that county, committing outrages on the persons and property of the Whig party. Applicant was marched from Randolph to the County of Guilford where he was employed in suppressing the Tories of that county, always engaged in doing mischief in the absence of armed bodies of Whigs. Applicant returned home to Orange after having performed his 3 months engagement in July 1781.” “Applicant states that in the fall of 1781, he volunteered for a second 3- months tour under the command of Captain John Taylor. That he and his company marched to the town of Hillsborough in Orange County where he was stationed as a guard over the Tory prisoners then in Hillsborough. It was about 20 in number. He says he was in Hillsborough for through the winter of 1781 and in January 1782 he then returned home, having served 3 months in his 2nd tour.” “Applicant states that in the fall of 1782, he substituted for a 3rd tour of 3 months for one John Pew. That he was in a fight with the Tories at Lewis Kirk’s in the County of Orange, when Richard Edwards, a Tory captain and Amos Thompson, a Tory lieutenant, were killed. That his own captain, Abraham Allen under whom he was fighting, was severely wounded in the engagement.” “Applicant states that he joined General Butler after the battle at Lindley’s Mills and marched below Fayetteville in pursuit of the Tories and then returned them to Orange. This applicant states that he was engaged in the fight at Cox’s Mills under the command of Colonel O’Neal against the notorious Colonel Fanning, who commanded the Tories.
