Yancey’s regiment, commanded by General Ashe. Colonel Yancey lived in Granville County, NC and his captain raised his company in Orange. States that they were marched to the neighborhood of Charleston, SC and joined General Ashe on the Savannah River and crossed over with him in the state of Georgia, where Ashe was defeated on Briar Creek. The next day they recrossed the river and fell under General Rutherford (as their General Ashe, after he was defeated, as he understood, was arrested). He was in service then, about 6 months and was discharged at Turkey Hill on the Savannah River.” “Shortly before Gates’ Defeat, he was drafted and served under several captains whose names he cannot now recollect. The company he was then in was at the battle at Camden, SC when Gates was defeated. He was so often transferred and detached about, he cannot recollect any of the names of his officers. After the battle, there was no regular discharge of the militia. Every man made the best of his way home. In this he served 3 months.” “After this, he was drafted and served a tour of 3 months in guarding jails and prisoners and collecting provisions for the army. The service was performed in the state of NC, Orange County. Col. Alexander Mebane was head commissary and who gave him his discharge.” Interrogatories: According to the records of his parents, he was born September 21, 1762, and in the state of Pennsylvania, Lancaster County. He took the copy of his record from his parents record. He lived in Orange County, NC when called into service. From there he moved to Pendleton District, SC, and lived 40 years, and 5 years since, he moved to this county where he lives still. He recollects serving under General Gates, also Col. Lytle, who he understood was a regular officer, who was put over some militia, and will always remember the great DeKalb, who fell at that battle.” “He further states that he has no documentary evidence to establish his services, nor can he prove the same as above stated except one tour, by any living witnesses. The first tour, his brother William Montgomery served with him in the same command, and were seldom apart.” File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/nc/orange/military/revwar/pensions/montgome401gmt.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/ncfiles/ File size: 3.1 Kb
