He had been for several years past much debilitated, so much so as not to have the free use of his limbs, when most afflicted, he had been heard to wish a speedy termination of his existence. He was a man much esteemed, and his townsmen at the last election, had chosen him to represent them again in the State Legislature. During the election, he was taken suddenly ill, which was believed by his friends to be the effects of a large dose of laudanum, taken, as they have reason to believe, to put an end to his existence. From this, he soon recovered, but with the determination of making use of a more effectual method of ending his life. And on Tuesday, Aug. 23rd, he locked himself up in his room, and having placed himself before a king glass, deliberately cut his throat from ear to ear with a razor-being weak in the arm, he made as many as three attempts, as is evident by the marks before he cut off the principal veins of his neck. In a short time, after his door was forced open, and he was found weltering in his blood, and nearly exhausted. Physicians were immediately called, and the wounds sewn up. It was nearly a day before he spoke, and he then expressed much regret that he had not completed his immediate existence. The wound nearly healed up, and he was for a short time apparently recovering, but the loss of between one and two gallons of blood had weakened him much, he was most of the time quite distracted, accompanied with a violent fever, seldom receiving any nourishment, and he died on Wednesday evening. He was a single man about 40 years old.
