The Late Mr. John W. Carr

The Durham Plant of Tuesday says:

Mr John W. Carr was born in Orange county, April 25, 1814, and died May 25, 
1889, and was, therefore, aged 75 years and 1 month. He spent almost his 
entire life in his native county, and at the time of his death and for many 
years previous thereto was a resident of Chapel Hill, where he was engaged in 
the mercantile pursuit.

Many years ago he chose the better part and embraced the precious faith of the 
christian religion and was a member of the Methodist church of Chapel Hill 
when he was called to rest. His kindness to the poor, both white and black, 
was a prominent characteristic and his good offices in this particular will 
cause him to be sadly missed by that class whom Christ declared we have always 
with us. Charity, sweet charity, is one of the brightest gems that sparkle in 
his jeweled crown. Mr. Carr leaves a wife and six children to mourn his death, 
but it is a blessed thought that they mourn not as those who have no hope of a 
happy re union beyond this vale of tears.

Mr. Carr was the father of our townspeople, Mr. J.S. Carr, Dr. A. G. Carr, and 
Mrs. W.A. Guthrie, and Mrs. J.T. Harris and Mr. R.E. Carr, of Chapel Hill, and 
Mrs. J.F. Heitman of Trinity College. To the bereaved ones, and especially to 
the widowed wife, we extend sincere sympathy in this time of sorrow. May
the consolations of the gospel be a balm to the wounds which earthly 
condolence cannot heal.
