Hughes of Durham died suddenly Sunday morning at his home. He was 71. Funeral services were held from the home Monday afternoon at 3:00. Hillsboro Masonic Lodge was in charge. Rev. Dwight M. Chalmers, pastor of Trinity Avenue Presbyterian church and Dr. Kelsey Regen, pastor of the First Presbyterian church conducted the funeral. He was buried in the family plot in Hillsboro Cemetery. Active Pallbearers: E. F. Dement, W.M. Ives, J.R. Barry, J.A. Woodal, R. M. Gantt, J. A. Ward, J. L. Conrad, Dr. W. P. Hardee and Dr. R. H. Holden. He was born May 20, 1873, in Orange County and was the son of the late John Knox Hughes and Ann Miller Hughes. He was educated in the public and private schools of the state. He was Sheriff of Orange County for several years. In 1910, he moved to Durham and was prominent in the civic affairs of the community and state. He was a lifelong Democrate. He was a county commissioner and a member of the State Democratic Executive committee. He was director of census for the State of North Carolina in 1940. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Trinity Avenue Presbyterian Church. Survivors: Wife: the former Miss Nannie Turner Three Sons: John Knox Hughes of Durham, T. M. Hughes of Wilson and E. A.
