The News, February 22, 1945
J. Mallie Long of Chapel Hill died Saturday night in a blaze that destroyed 
his home.
Neighbors discovered the blaze at 12 o'clock, but, were unable to remove him, 
due to intense heat.
He was an employee of the University of North Carolina and a native of Orange 
County.
Survivors:
Wife: Mrs. Berta Womble Long
Two daughters: Mrs. James Hackney and Mrs. George Freeland
Two sons: Paul and Jack Long, all of Orange County
Six sisters and nine grandchildren also survive
Friends served as pallbearers and floral bearers at the service conducted by 
Rev. William H. Poole of Carrboro at Damascus Christian church.
