Joseph Melza Saunders of Chapel Hill, died April 27 in a local hospital.
He was 93.
Graveside service held Friday in Magnolia Cemetery in Elon College by Rev. 
Richard L. Jackson, pastor of Congregational Christian Church in Durham.
Pallbearers: John T. Kernodle, William T. Dickerson, James Harward, Arnis 
Glenn, Curtis Young, Steve Canada, Clifton Walker and Lawrence Fields.
Born in Isle of Wright County, Virginia
Son of John M. Saunders and Mrs. Alice Jones Saunders.
Moved to Durham in 1911 from Elon College, moved to Chapel Hill last fall.
Many years a member of Congregational Christian Church.
Veteran of the Spanish-American War and active in all phases of the veteran 
affairs in Durham
Married Ella Boone in 1902.
Survivors:
Wife: Ella Boone Saunders
Two sons: J. Maryon Saunders of Chapel Hill and Charles Boone Saunders of 
Charlotte
One sister: Mrs. Sue Baines of Suffolk, Va
5 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren
