Raleigh Standard, 27 May 1863
    DIED, at the Fairgrounds Hospital, Raleigh, N. C., on the 4th inst., MR. 
GEORGE C. THOMPSON, aged 23 years and nine days. A son of JOHN D. and 
CATHARINE THOMPSON of Orange County, N. C. The deceased entered the camp of 
instruction near Raleigh, N. C., on the 15th July 1862. He fought bravely in 
the fight at Kinston, was taken prisoner, paroled and sent home, and stayed 
until he was exchanged, and then returned to camp, where he remained about, 
two months, when taken with pneumonia.
