Jan. 13, 1859 North Carolina Argus MELANCHOLY DEATH OF MERRIL UTLEY On the morning of the 25th ult., Christmas Day, a most melancholy accident occured in Hillsboro. MR. MERRIL UTLEY, for the purpose of amusing his boys, bored a large auger hole in a log in his yeard, and, after charging it with powder, drove in a plug, leaving a small hole for priming and without calculating the consequences, put fire to it while standing nearly over it. the log was split, one part knocking down a fence near by, and the other part striking him on the temple, made a large hole in his head. Though apparently lifeless at first, he lingered in a dying state for three or four more hours, when he breathed his last. By the sudden bereavement, a large family has been left in the midst of a most disturbing condition. -- Hillsboro' Record File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/nc/orange/obits/u/utley838ob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/ncfiles/ File size: 1.4 Kb
