WILL OF WILLIAM BUMPAS
10 March 1776
Orange County, North Carolina
Book A, Page 201   Proved May 1776

In the name of God, Amen, the tenth day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand 
seven hundred and seventy-six.  I William Bumpas of the county of Orange and Province 
of North Carolina being sick and weak of body but perfect mind and memory thanks be To 
god for the same, therefore, recognizing the mortality of body, and knowing that it is 
appointed unto all men once to die do make and ordain this my last will and testament.

Principally and first of all I give and recommend my precious and immortal soul into 
the hands of God that gave it me, and as for my body I recommend it to the earth to be 
buried in a decent and Christian like manner, and that at the discretion of my Executors, 
whom hereafter I shall name nothing doubting but the General Resurrection I shall receive 
the same again by the mighty power of God and as touching my worldly Estate wherewith it 
hath pleased God to bless me, after my just debts and funeral expenses are paid, I give, 
devise, and dispose of followeth to wit:

Item   I give and bequeath to my well beloved father Robert Bumpas, all that tract of 
land whereon I now live, and also one negro man, named Phil to him and to his assigns 
forever. 
Item   I give and bequeath to my well beloved wife,  Mary Bumpas,  all the rest of my 
Personal Estate to her and her heirs and assigns forever, my desire is my estate be not 
appraised but the legacies be delivered in kind as mentioned.

Item   I make and ordain my true and trusted friend Gabriel Davey and Mary Bumpas and 
Edward Bumpas sole Executors of this my last will and testament.

 In Witness thereof I have set my hand and seal.
