I, Amelia Latta of the Orange County, North Carolina do hereby make and publish this as my last will and testament. First, I direct all my just debts if any, to be paid as soon as convenient after my death. Secondly, I give and devise to my sisters Elizabeth Latta, Jane Latta Arrena Latta Rachael Latta and Fanny F. Latta, provided and on condition they shall remain unmarried at my death, all my property, land negroes and every thing else; To them and th[e]ir sur= vivors and survivors of them and the heirs of the heirs of the survivors of them. But such of them as shall marry after my death shall forfeit upon marriage her share: which shall go to her unmarried sisters above named at the time of her ["death" x-out] marriage. My purpose being to continue the property to my unmarried sisters, as long as they shall remain unmar= ried for their home and support. And if any of them shall marry, the part which she has received, or is entitled to, of my pro= perty shall go to her single sisters above named, in the same manner as I have here given it. Faucette } Thos G. Pratt } Orange County Court February Term 1867 The foregoing last Will and Testament of Ametia[sic] Latta was duly proved in open Court by the oath of Thos. G. Pratt whose name appears as witness Additional Comments: Will Book Volume G, page 511 Recorded Feb 1867 This is nearly word-for-word the same as the will of Elizabeth Latta - written in the same handwriting, same date. Estate Papers comprise 28 pages and are found in a folder labeled "Latta, Amelia (1867)". Thomas Lang was appointed administrator. While "negroes" are mentioned in the will, the estate was probated after Emancipation, and no enslaved persons are mentioned in the estate papers. The land was jointly owned by five sisters. Her share was a one-fifth portion of the tract of approximately 150 acres, which when divided resulted in a 37 acre tract.
