In consideration of my age and physical weakness it is evident to me that at most my days on earth are few, and therefore I do now cause to be written this my last will and testament. First - That my children shall ever make my [house] a house of prayer, that they shall ever fear God keep his commandments, and live at peace with all mankind. Second - I do hereby bequeath to my wife Maria and all of my unmarried children, my house and land to be their several home, so long as they or any of them remain unmarried, but believing that it is contrary to divine decree that several families should live in the same house and that by disregarding that decree, the peace.of many families has often been marred therefore, it is not my will that any of my children, who are now or who may hereafter be married shall take their wives or husbands to live in the house, which I do herebybequeath to my unmarried children and their dear mother. If ....one of my children who is now single should marry, ....after that , that one...they should be as are those of their brothers who are now married. Third- the old colt I bequeath to my son William. My son Martin is entitled to one half of the young colt but my half interest in the young colt I bequeath to my wife Maria the same to be ..... willed to my daughter Louisa if she survives her mother. Fourth - My daughters Sallie and Maria I will shall have a cow each and that my son London shall [have] my gun but it is not to be removed during the life of his mother. Fifth - Any and every thing now in my possession, but not herein specified, shall be in possession of my wife Maria and subject to her will. Sixth - I would that all of my sons be guardians for their mother and also for their unmarried sisters while they remain unmarried not usurping authority over them butadvising them and watching over them in and especially is it the wish of her ....mother as well as myself that our cripple child Mariashould always have a home and the especial care of all her brothers. Seventh - I will that this home shall not be parted with while any member to whom this instrument gives a right to said home shall oppose such measures. But if in the judgment of all, it should....but to sell said home and any of the family should prefer to buy it, I would that ....should have at least ten dollars the advantage of anyone else proposing to buy the said property. Therefore in that case let it not be sold at auction, but ....the sale into the hands of such persons as my be selected by the several interested members of the family. The last word of this my testament is that my children walk not in the council of the ungodly nor stand in the way of sinners, but let their delight be in the law of the Lord. This instrument was written according to mywish and read in my hearing will in my perfect mind. In witness of which I have set my hand and seal. {seal} Anderson A. X Whitted {seal} James A.
