All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/nc/ncfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Sharon Marsalis sharonmarsalis@hotmail.com January 17, 2006, 7:54 pm The entries have been transcribed exactly as they appear on the Bible pages, including misspellings, however the order of the Marriage, Birth and Death entries differ from that in the Bible for the sake of clarification. This Bible was published in 1834. The handwriting for the birth entries for Henry and Ann Covert, John and Hyram Hooker appear to be the same. Most of the other entries are in a different handwriting. This Hooker family line began its residence in NC in the mid 1600s and by the mid 1700s was in Tyrrell County, NC before moving to Craven County, NC in the mid 1800s and finally on to Pamlico county in the early 1880s. .” Henry Covert the son of David Covert & his wife Sarah was born on 30th day of August 1800 in City County & State of Newyork.” “Anne Covert the daughter of Hezikiah Davenport and his wife Deborah was born 1st November 1797 in Little Alligator County Tyrrell State North Carolina. “ ( Hezekiah Davenport and Deborah Halsey’s Marriage Bond was 07 Jul 1789 County Tyrrell , State NC ) “Henry Covert and Anne was married on Sunday the 21 of December 1832.” (No location is given) “Ann Eliza Covert died 18th September 1865. “(New Bern, NC) “Henry Covert died 12th October 1875.” (New Bern, NC) (Anne Davenport was married first to Hyram Hooker. Marriage Bond was 08 June 1816 County Tyrrell, State NC. It is presumed that the following John and Hyram were their sons. Family tradition also says there was a Nathan. ) “John Hooker was born April 12th in the year of our Lord 1817.” “Hyram Hooker was born April 19th in the year of our Lord 1821.” “Margerett Justice the daughter of Demsy Justice and his wife Hetty was born February 19th 1812.” “John Hooker and Margerett his wife was married on the 23rd of May 1840.” (There is a Marriage Bond that lists Margaret with surname “Jester”. All other documented records give her surname as “Justice”. The Bond is dated 23 May, 1840 County Craven, State NC .The following are their 3 sons. ) “John Hooker the son of John Hooker and his wife Margerett was born February 10th 1841.” “John Hooker the son of John and his wife died 20th August 1841.” “William Thomas Hooker was born 19th June 1843.” “Henry Covert Hooker the son John & Margerat his wife was born on 13th November 1846.” “Margerat Hooker the wife of John Hooker died on 30th January 1852.” (According to a NC Marriage Bond dated 25 Dec., 1852 for Craven County John next married Mary Dudley) “Prudence Rice died September 6th 1864.” (Prudence Justice Rice was the sister of Margaret Justice Hooker. They were the daughters of Dempsey and Hester Hoover Justice of New Bern. Dempsey’s estate was inventoried September, 1817 and his wife and daughters are named in the final settlement of March 3, 1820. “Henry Covert Hooker died September 26th 1864.” (A newspaper list of New Bern mortalities gives his name as one of many who had died of the “fever”.) (The following 3 children, except for Susan Ann Hooker, belonged to John and Mary Dudley Hooker.) “Demsey Justice Hooker the son of John Hooker and wife Mary (Dudley) was born 13 September 1858.” “Susan Ann Hooker was born 8th July 1858(?).” (This was Susan Ann Miller the first wife of Dempsey Justice Hooker)” Joseph Hooker son of Dempsy & Susan was borned Sept 3rd 1888.” “Ann Elizabeth Hooker the daughter of John Hooker and Mary (Dudley) his (second) wife was born 2nd day November 1864.” “.”John L Hooker Grant born July 1866.” (Mary is not in the 1870 NC Census so had presumably died shortly after this birth. The Kellenberger Room, New Bern, NC has in Records from 1870 to 1910 the following: “25 October 1870—To the Probate Court, Craven County, and N.C. The undersigned would respectfully request that my son Littlejohn Hooker now of the age of 4 years, 10 months, 18 days may be bound to Wm. Grant of Township No.2, Craven County…John Hooker.” Witness: Wm. H. (?) Cooke. Family tradition says John Lewis Hooker Grant was adopted by the Grants but always stayed close to the surviving Hooker children.
