This indenture made this 27 day of December in the year Eighteen hundred and seventy 
seven between Oliver D. Lewis and Louisa his wife of the county of Pamlico and State 
of North Carolina of the first part and Bradford Gatlin of the County and state 
aforesaid of the second part; Witnesseth; that the said parties of the first part, for 
and in consideration of the sum of seven hundred dollars the receipt of which is hereby 
acknowledged has given granted bargained sold and conveyed and does hereby give grant 
bargain sell and convey to the said party of second part his heirs and assigns a 
certain piece or parcel of land lying in the county of Pamlico and State aforesaid on 
the head of Alligator Creek bounded as follows. Beginning at James H. Gaskins Northeast 
Corner and Runs.N61 1/4 W 40 pole to John H. Nichols line then with said line S24 1/2 
W. 100 pole then S 61 1/4 E 40 pole to John S. Brabble¹s then with said line S 61 1/4 
E 40 James H. Gaskins line then with said line N 25 W 100 pole to the beginning 
containing 25 acres.. To have and to hold the same with the appurtances thereunto 
belonging to Bradford Gatlin the said party of the second part his heirs and assigns 
forever, And the party of the first part for the consideration aforesaid does hereby 
covenant and agree to warrant and defend the premises aforesaid to the said party of 
the second part, his Executors administrators and assigns against the claim and entry 
of all persons whatsoever.

In witness whereof the said party of the first part has hereunto set his hand and seal 
on the day and year above written.

On this the 29th day of December 1877 before me J.H. Miller Judge of Probate for said 
county personally appeared Oliver D. Lewis and Louisa Lewis the persons described here 
and who signed the foregoing conveyance and severally acknowledged the due execution 
thereof for the purpose therein expressed. And thereupon the said Louisa Lewis being 
by me personally examined apart from her said husband touching her free consent in 
this execution thereof Acknowledged that she executed the same freely and without or 
compulsion of her said husband and does still voluntarily assent thereto and hereby 
relinquishes her right of Dower in said lands Therefore let the deed and this 
certificate be registered.
